£1500 budget for a diesel estate, expecting in excess of 100k miles.

Requirements:-
Reliable, or minimal upkeep
Low insurance, possibly around group 9
Aiming for 60mpg

Niceties:
Decent/comfortable interior
Aircon
Cruise control
CD autochanger
Decent handling always a nice option

Considered:-

A Mondeo 2003-ish model year. Put off a bit by DMF issues and a bi-polar minger with loads of issues to one that can have none.

A 320D 2003-ish model year. Put off by swirl flap issues.

Any suggestions? Anyone selling?

I think i have it. Either a fiat stilo jtd estate or a fiat ulysse jtd... smile

768kg load limit as well on the ulysse! I couldn't fill that with weights if i tried!

Yeah I thought about a '75. I dare admit I love the interior as well. Nut it's a Rover. How long before it goes wrong?

BMW diesel engine, BMW build qulity, No BMW swirl flaps to worry about.

Every car has common issues and the 75 seemns to suffer from water on the ECU if the channels aren't cleared out and the typical EGR clogging etc. No worse than any other 10 year old diesel (No DPF to worry about either). I've got the MG varient and I properly love it.

Oooh I didn't know that '75's had the same BMW engine. So are these Turbo'd engines or NA's?

As long at there is no K-series variant. My bro had a ZR that had the usual top end failure... then gearbox failure... then electrical failre... all before 80k miles.

Turbo'd 2.0 diesel with either 114 or 135 bhp. Both are the same and the only diffference is the map on the ECU. Many were remapped at the dealers to 135.

They're supposed to be the pick of the bunch with the exception of the V8 RWD ones. My advice would be go and look at and drive one and see what you think. They certainly are a lot of car for the money.
