Hi all - first post in this section wavey

To summarise our situation Dad had a 944 cabriolet, but we dont anymore frown In order for dad to continue his classic insurance policy the replacement must be a pre 2001 car. The budget is approximitley £8500, and whist there are some nice cars in that range dad is hestitant about some of them - ie getting in/out of a lotus Elise/VX220 (also mileage/age/price), usability of Westfield etc....

Anyway, I was remembered coincidently the BBR MX5 was reviewed on PH a little while ago (I really liked it) and I was wondering whether anyone on here had actually bought a car from them. £7500 sounds very reasonable price for a specced up MX5 with 220bhp biggrin I've got some questions and I'll feed them back to dad:

What is it like to live with?
How is like to drive? Is it twitchy in damp/adverse conditions?
Is reliability a problem?
Can BBR do this work on a MK2 MX5?

I'd really appreciate what you have to tell me, and I'll let you lnow what the outcome is smile

Phil

Really? You think so? I don't!

Plenty of charged, well looked after cars knocking around on owners clubs for a lot less than that...

None of those aforementioned cars will be brand new kit with a warranty etc. Unless you know what you're doing you could end up with a complete dog.

I think for a turnkey solution it is very good value.

The £7500 option was one where they got the car, resprayed it, re-upholstered the interior as well as doing all the modifications for you, for me to completely pull apart the car, tune, and rebuild it to your spec sounds pretty good.

Im just wanting to know whether anyone has got one of these 220bhp kits on their MX5, and what theyre like to live with?

220bhp is fine to live with, assuming that the owner/driver is aware that more throttle = more power and there are no stability systems to cut in if you forget this.

If you start planting the throttle mid bend wet or dry the back end IS going to step out. As long as you're aware of that it's absolutely fine.

They're no MR2/Elise/S2000 that will spit you off the road backwards if you make a mistake mind, they're very catchable.

Get your dad to test drive a mk3. Well within budget, modern car build, saftey and reliability and 160bhp in a 1100kg car is I believe enough with a well ballance chassis. Cheap to run and insure plus 30mpg. A blast to drive!

It's a consideration, I started a thread a while ago about potential candidates but completely forgot the BBR MX5. Possibly also a Porsche Boxster, but I'm quite swayed by the MX5 smile

Yes, get one if you like loads of understeer and sudden, snap oversteer.

You must be referring to the first part of the statement?

I prefer my FI'd MX5 to the MY04 S2000 I had before it, in everyway except looks.

Jesus, don't go all defensive.

The aforementioned cars are more snappy at the limit than an MX5, that is merely my point that is all. I'm not having a dig at any of those cars.

I was also responding to below. They are very predictable at the limit with the right tyres setup. How is saying 'not the case' , "going all defensive". confused

Just how much work do you get for the £7.5k I wonder.
i.e. the Dog to Queen ratio.

Thats the story I read, just got me thinking about whether it seems a fair deal to have a MX5 rebuilt to our own specs for £7500.
