Dunno if anyone else has had the same problem, I have noticed a smell of petrol a few times when filling up and not thought much of it however I noticed it today when reversing down a slope when the tank was full. When I got home I opened the boot to find the tank sender (top right of tank on mine) is leaking and there was wet carpet down the side of the tank and on the boot floor.. I haven't done anything yet as I haven't had time, Is there a seal which can be replaced or is it somthing more sinister.. Looks like it is leaking between the sender and the tank.....
I had a leak in the boot which I couldnt find where the carpet besige the tank on the left would get wet, but it didnt happen all the time. The smell of petrol was really strong.
Turns out that the clip that holds the rubber pipe that goes from the filler hole to the tank had moved up the pipe and wasnt gripping it to the tank pipe, hence the petrol leaked when I was filling up and ran down the side of the tank into the boot.
Worth a look.

I'm just speculating as I havent looked at my sender, nor have I looked it up in the bible, but - all the sender units I've ever seen have an annular seal between them and the tank and are usually held in place by a ring with wedge shaped ramps which tightens as it is rotated pressing the sender aginst the seal and tank. As i say I'm not sure if this is the set up on the TVR but if it is it could be either a failed seal (less likely) or a loose locating ring (more likely)
Just got home and had a look at my tank sender, Just shows one shouldn't assume anything! There is no locking ring etc, Sender plate seems to be simply bolted to the tank with a ring of 5 bolts. There is a rubber seal sandwiched between the sender and tank (mine looks to have been cut by hand from a sheet !). Obviously the bolts need to be tight (although I guess its possible that if they are over-tightened this could distort the sender plate and actually compromise the seal...) I suppose there could be a leak through the electrical connections, as at some point, under the plug, there must be a portal into the tank. Are you sure the leak is from here? 
Just sorted it today..... Some complete knob had used bolts that were too long on the sender and distorted up the tank... Nothing a bit of liquid metal sealer didn't sort out... no more leak.... Must have been either the factory or a dealer as it hasn't been anywhere else... weird...
