Does it need to be 0w-30?
Reason I ask is because you can get Mobil1 0w-40 5L for about £30 from Costco and I'd rate that as a better quality oil.

supposed to be 0w30 or 5w30 depending on climate and conform to whatever the bmw long life standard is (longlife-01?).

The Castrol Edge is the one recommended by BMW and complies with their Longlife standards.

Costco also sell Castrol Edge at a similar price but it's 5w40.

Currently have EDGE 5w-30 in my R53, was going to use Mobil1 0w-40 next time round (Costco!), will that be ok?

In the Haynes manual it says either 0W-30 or 5W-30(fully synth).

Just buy the proper stuff! £28.50 for 4 litres!

Not worth skimping on oil IMHO.

I reckon it's skimping if you buy the wrong grade oil because it's cheaper!

Only trying to help fellow PHers bag a bargain. Won't bother again.

Hey, no problem. I'll use whatever is recommended. On the MX5 they recommend something like 5-40 semi-synth but it's pretty well acknowledged that 0-40 fully synth works better. The early cars have hydraulic tappets and the later cars have oil powered VVT though and the engines are bullet-proof so it's all about keeping the oil-ways clear and 0-40 full synth is better at that (and Mobil1 is better than the same grade Magnatec).

If 5-30 full synth is what's recommended and accepted as being best for the Mini engine then that's what I'll stick with.

How do you define the 'wrong' grade? I dont think MINI even specify a grade in the handbook, only that it meets the relevent spec (LL04 or whatever is is)

You seem to have missed the point of this thread. It wasn't meant to be a debate about which oil is suitable for a mini. I was just letting people know that there was a cheap price available on Castrol Edge. Castrol Edge is recommended for the mini and meets the relevant standards dictated by BMW/Mini. It's available cheaper than usual from Euro Car Parts. That's it.

I don't care what oil you want to put in your car!

Mini dealers officially recommend 5w30 or 0w30 Edge. Using Mobil1 0w40 would mean using an oil that doesn't conform with that spec.

The bigger the difference between the numbers, the less specialised an oil can be as it has to do a "wider" lubricity job so having the "proper" oil makes sense.
