It's contagious up to roughly 9 days after the symptoms present but it is generally spread via saliva. If your child has been immunised fully then unlikely to catch it (but never say never).

I personally think I would keep my child at home but have given you the information above to help you make your own decision. Mumps is a notifiable disease and can have some nasty complications.
