So, I've got a reallly bad virus at the moment and one of the symptoms is bouts of coughing, easily severe enough to wake me up and to give me a sore throat (or at least add to the soreness already there). So I get a friend to go to the chemist for cough mixtures and bring a selection.

The main choice is dry tickly, or chesty. Now, what I've got comes across as a dry tickle because nothing much comes up. However, I've been wondering if maybe I need to take the chesty stuff to see if I can make something come up, maybe with the coughing my body is telling me I need to get rid of something? But the chesty cough stuff doesn't have any cough suppression ingredients, just something to make the phlegm looser. As for the Bennilyn Dry Tickly mixtures, they appear to be just various sugars and syrups wih flavourings and colourings, no active ingredients at all, they might as well have Placebo written in large letters across them.

So I've been alternating between the Pholcodine anti-tussive (dry tickly suppressive) and the Guaifenesin chesty, and as far as I can tell, neither of them are doing the slightest fking good whatsoever.

Thought you seemed overly irritable of late.

Bog standard Codeine linctus.Leave the pholcodine it's not as effective - I've tried both.Covonia nighttime if you need sleep badly.Don't touch any expectorant it'll make your cough worse.

It's not rocket science SC.

The best cure for a sore throat/cough I have found is to drink a very large malt whisky(whatever your favourite strong spirit is) as neat as I can manage. If it doesnt burn on the way down its too weak.

to the OP - do not waste your money on cough mixtures.
Most coughs are self limiting, and things will improve. if your cough persists for more than 2 weeks, then see your GP.
Alot of the stuff in cough mixtures is, quite frankly a complete waste of time, although they can taste ok lick
if you have a chesty cough, keep coughing to get rid of the mucous. failure to expectorate make lead to a secondary chest infection.
