I've got an insatiable craving for a barge. I dont need one. I work full time from home, I have 3 cars (Elise, Pajero, 320d) and only drive about twice a week. However, I cant seem to shake it. I dont want to spend much money as its going to be surplus to requirements before I even buy it. I just want something comfy to tool about in every now and again when I dont feel like being rattled about in the Lotus which is what I use most of the time.

Ive looked at Lexus LS, 7 series and XJ's. The LS seem to have the most toys by a long way (fridge!!!), but seem to be more expensive. The 7 series, seem to be in the middle on both toys and price. The XJ's though seem to be really cheap. Like 1999/2000 cars for 1200-1500. Theres loads at that money on fairly sensible mileages (but no nav or heated seats etc). Now I know one medium sized issue will probably write off the car but they probably weigh 2 tonnes so there will be some money in scrap if nothing else but how are they reliablity wise. My tooling about in a barge will be less fun if its always breaking down. Should I plump up the extra cash for a 7 series or woudl the XJ make a really comfy barge toy for very little money

Example: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C297401 (this one needs a bit of paint repair but is near my and pretty cheap)

Hmmm, I too succumbed to this very idea and bought a 98 XJ8 sport 3.2 a few years ago, it didn't suffer the dreaded nikasil problem which was nice, it did however need, new bearings, new brakes, new rear offside wheel hub, and to top it all off, I needed to buy new tyres (18" 255 all round), all in all best part of 3 grand in 1 year, 13-18 mpg normal use, on a run I saw about 28 (once) sadly the car went up to big scrapyard in the sky after having an off in Central London, if you do get one, be careful if you have a full boot, no petrol and no other passengers, it likes to swing it's backside : )

Would I do it again? Absolutely. ( the buying and owning bit, not the losing it bit )

Gorgeous interior, beautiful silky ride, woofly engine that pulls nicely. I want an XJR when I can some day.

good luck!

I ran a 2001 XJ8 for 18 months or so, and all it cost me in that time was a service, MOT and a thermostat (80 quid, fitted).

Great cars, but beware the tinworm.
