golf gt tdi 150 starting problems

hi i have a mk4 golf gt tdi 150 and when i go to start sometimes it wont , i have to turn the ignition on and off a few times until eventually it will start, but when i start an awful lot of smoke comes out the back on start, any ideas any 1?

Could be any one or more of the following:
Faulty LP pump
Faulty HP pump
Faulty glowplug(s)
Faulty wiring to injectors (inside cyl. head)
Faulty injectors
Poor compression on one or more cylinders
Blocked/faulty fuel filter
Air leak in fuel system

Best starting point is probably to get it plugged into diagnostics and see what fault codes are present.

Camsgaft wear is common on these, the cams mechanically operate the injectors (Pump Dueze) can be quite expensive & not an easy fix. Head off job.


Cam cover off to inspect the cam lobes would be wise first off

Is the starting bad all the time or just when the engine is totally cold?

If one or more glow plugs are bad then it would show up then, but not when the engine was warm....
