Hi All,

I have been on a quest over the last few weeks to find my new car to replace my ageing S Type R. So far I have looked at and driven quite a few, I am looking for something special and originally was looking at a very sporty type car. I have looked at and driven the following:

DB9
Vantage
997 911 cab and coupe
M5
XFR
XKR

So as my process moved forward I have started looking at larger super saloons. As much as I try and convince myself that my 3 kids are irrelivant in this process it turns out that I will need something larger. Damn my furtile loins!!

I think I have settled on a Jag XFR which is stunning piece of kit, amazingly balanced, crazy fast, very comfy, well kitted out and a great all rounder.

So before I close on a deal I just wanted to get the general view on these cars

anything I should be wary of (i am looking at a 09 with low mileage from a Jag dealer)
anything I haven't thought of in this process?
any views from owners?

Cheers!

I'm a huge fan of them - for me they are the best compromise between driver appeal and comfort in a sports saloon, but then I'm highly influenced by that merlinesque bark from the engine! biggrin

Fantastic automobiles. Like you, my wife will almost certainly change her S-Type V8, which has been a great car, for a nice XF V8 5.0 Portfolio, or a slightly older XFR. They're both tremendous value. smile

Can't really go wrong with an XFR!

..but just to throw something else in the mix - Vauxhall VXR8 Saloon?

There is only one issue with a 2009 XFR...

... and that is the facelift cars. Jag did that rare trick of taking a great looking car and making it even better.

Ah, sorry.

As an aside, the wife's car is in for service (at a franchised Jaag dealer) in the next couple of weeks, 40k service = £196.

Brake pads all round £125 (fitted myself).

Tyres, ok they can be expensive, and they're 'only' 18s on the S-Type, but budget £150 corner minimum if you can find a deal somewhere.

Biggest expense is getting alloys refurbished every other year. 40 profile tyres + wife + kerb = frown

I would say that my S Type R is fairly 'boaty' , loads of scary power and superb in straight lines. Feels a little dated on the handling front.

The XFR was a totally different proposition and may be one of the better handling cars I tried. Amazingly agile for such a large car and in sports mode the throttle response was increadible!

I have been looking at a black one with bright red interior and you right it looks stunning! (love the aircon seats as well!)

How long do you have to keep it for?

Get the XFR, have fun in it............then after 4-6 months ish swap over to a 911 of some kind and have fun in that.

why not

No specific amount of time, probably longer than that though. Not sure I could put myself or my family through this amount of pain any more often!

Old man is tinkering with the idea of an SV8. THe test drive was so much fun- can only imagine how much fun an XFR would be.

And a truly animalistic roar at Bonneville, sounds like a big cat:
