hello im making this thread to ask opinions on first cars.
im doing my lessons just now and instructor says i should be ready for my test shortly and once i start college im getting a loan so i can get a car as its better than a hour bus journey and works out cheaper really.
i really want a honda civic but insurance doesnt look like it wants to allow me to have that so im asking what is the best choice for a first car.
im sure everyone here knows better than me how insurance works and how much it could cost i have been on go compare for a few cars and few months ago i found a 1.6 civic that was going be £800 to insure but i had no money for the car at that point so lost that chance. But now when i look the insurance is well over £1000 close to the £2000 mark even for a 1.4 .

so anyone have any opinions whats the best choice for a first car?

Classic cars and often less obvious cars, i.e. not run of the mill hatchbacks will offer the best insurance.

If you want a laugh look at something like a Land Rover Series III 88, it's cool, retro, different and everyone will love it.

Look at cars that are in low insurance groups on there^. Consider it a general guide though.
If you want cheap insurance look to 1-litre superminis. aygo,yaris,106,corsa etc..

Personally I'd say this is the wrong advice completely. Insurance groups a guide, but often cars can be cheaper to insure even if in a higher group.

For first time drivers you will be ass raped insuring a 1.0 supermini where often bigger cars are either cheaper to insure or cost no more, but at least you can end up with a car that has an engine rather than a toaster under the bonnet at no extra insurance outlay.

yea i know older cars are cheaper for insurance plus somtimes tax exempt. but land rovers tend to enjoy their diesel dont they? althought cant say i would want to drive one every day.
im starting to think might just be cheaper getting my dad insured on whatever car i get and then just go on his insurance.

Go for something like a mk1 Focus if insurance allows, civics are notoriously expensive to insure for young drivers and it is miles better than any Corsa.

A classic would be cheap, but you have to be prepared to get your hands dirty every now and then and do without various creature comforts. My mate had a Capri for his first car and loved it! Constant niggles though, didn't bother him as he loves that stuff but I think it would have annoyed me after a while.

im not sure how insurance works really but what i was told a while ago was that insurance tends to be higher on cars that are normaly crashed or stolen.
so that would kinda rule out corsa's n saxo's typical first cars wouldnt it? as i have seen pleny of them rolled in a field.

i have had a look at some focus's. and yea i dont really want a corsa not a big fan of them to be fair.
i wouldnt mind a classic but im not exactly in the know about engines i know bits and bobs but never got down and dirty with them really.
and the issue is i dont have a big budget im only going to have about £3000 and thats for everything car + insurance and anything else thats required its not alot but its all im gonna have.

This. A Focus 1.6 is cheaper to buy and insure than an equivalent Fiesta and quite a bit better!

Probably best to ignore all the typical PH comments about buying old barges, etc, which won't be ideal to drive as a first car, will cost a lot more to run, and will leave you totally high and dry if (when) they break down. I'm just waiting for someone to suggest a V70/850 T5.

Insurance has gone up anyway. How old are you?

Getting your dad insured as the main driver on the car that you are the main driver of is called fronting and it is illegal.

Try things like putting the car on fully comprehensive, put both your parents on your insurance, even your grandparents, say you park it on the road, not on the drive or in a garage, try to steer clear of Fords because they seem to be a higher insurance.

If you find some cars that you like, go to carinsurancegroups.co.uk and see what bands they are. Different derivatives can make a big difference. E.g, my 1.8 MX-5 Jasper Conran was £300 a year more to insure than a normal 1.8 MX-5, or even an S-VT, purely because it's a rarer car.

Insurance companies work on statistics, so a rarer car is going to be more expensive, something that is driven by boy racer is going to financially rape you etc. Also, there's some sites to see what band your postcode comes into. That's worth a shot too. But these do also still work on statistics. E.g. My postcode is a higher band than my friends, but my insurance would still be higher at his postcode because it's a st hole and cars get broken into all the time, whereas I live in a village.

Also, if you can, pay for the insurance in full, it can shave a good couple of hundred pounds off, and if you get a new car that's cheaper insurance, you'll get some money back.

Try places like Admiral, they do a 10 month policy, after which you receive a years no claims. They will also price match their sister companies.

Just play about on comparison sites and see what's what and then try and get people to price match.

With only a £3k budget i wouldn't dismiss cars like this just yet(FSH off the radar etc for young drivers). Its a first car remember, not your dream car...

im 21 so yea leaveing it a bit late getting the whole car thing done.
obviously i have been looking at this site for a quite a while now and i know a MX-5 is the car to buy on here everyone loves them but for me i want a car with preferably more seats rather than just 2.
and i dont want the typical 1.0 car i would like somthing with a bit of power just because its nice to have as its better to have power and not use it than to have no power when you need it :P

i dident know it was illegal to have your parents insured and just go on their insurance i thought quite alot of people did that just to get cheaper insurance.
yea i know where you keep the car n everything puts the insurance up but i stay in a village and the car would be parked on the street outside the house not exactly much crime out here.
but also insurance depends on the price of the car does it not? say i got the car for £500 wouldnt the insurance be cheaper because the car was cheap? rather than spending a couple of thousand on a car?

Don't, you won't have cheap insurance, you'll have very expensive NO insurance.

im not dismissing any cars yet i mean obviously its going to be my first car so i cant really be picky about it. but obviously something cheap, cheap to run and small would be preferable.

A lot of people smoke marijuana, does that mean its not illegal
I always found astras were quite reasonable for insurance. The same with Rover 25s and 45, 1.4 twin cams.

Too right. forget the estates and get the S60 T5, nicer shape and cheaper than an equivalent V70.
