Scrapping vs Breaking
Discussion
Opinions on options for either??
The daily runner has become less and less reliable as the months pass, with pretty much something new needed doing each month. If I can’t get anything reasonable for it as a trade in on a new motor, or if I buy my new motor privately, I’ve thought about these options.
I know someone who would be interested in the engine, which is the only reliable thing about the car right now, and given the fact I put it in around 2years ago with a verified 25k on it and it’s now done just over 50k there’s loads of life left in it yet! Having spoken to a sales garage this counts for nothing, as I’d expected, as they are interested in the car as a whole.
I know people who have done both scrapping and broken cars, and each say it’s the better option.
Scrapping is obviously the easiest and hassle free option, I drive it to a scrap yard and get a wad of cash/cheque for my troubles. I have however heard the scrappy’s are paying less and less for cars lately as more people are taking this route.
I also have the option of one of the cash4cars type of companies, similar thing, take the car and documents to them, they give me pittance for it compared to what it ‘should’ be worth. Each option leaves me with a wad of cash to use on the new car.
With breaking, I need to have somewhere to keep it, strip it for the parts required, then sort out with the buyer collection/couriers. Ebay/gumtree will more than likely be the avenue I take to get rid of the bits. This option has been told to reap the greater financial gain, provided, and it can be make or break, the buyers are there to require the parts I’m stripping.
In an ideal world I’d keep the thing and tinker with it to use as a weekend blaster/workhorse for my rally duties, but even with the most creative manmaths it isn’t a realistic option

I'm not sure what you're actually asking here - you list the pros and cons of both options, so really it's down to you as to whether you have the time, space and inclination to break the car.
Have you had a price for it as scrap yet? I suspect you won't get much of a "wad" for it, whatever it is.

Is it the Focus or the Hyundai?
There'll be more demand for Focus bits I'd have thought but maybe not so much value as they're so common.
Do you have the patience to strip bits off the car and post them to people for minimal profit? Personally I know I wouldn't so I'd scrap it but then I'm very lazy.

Hmm - tricky. Have you had a look on Ebay etc. to see what sort of demand there is for the parts?
Also, and I could be way off having not broken a car for years, but don't you need a licensed "dismantler" to verify the car's been scrapped to keep the DVLA happy now? I guess if you're left with the shell you could weigh that in and get them to sort the DVLA that way?

Sorry, forgot to say it’s the Focus.
and I think I got lost in the post and went away from the point! I’m basically looking for opinions on either, from people that have done either.
Having had a look at ebay, there’s always someone breaking a Focus, and most of the parts, engine/interior are almost as good as new and seem a waste to get crushed/scrapped, but I suppose it may just be me knowing what’s good on the car and begrudging binning them when most are nearly new.
I don’t have an ideal set up for storing the car to break, the inlaws have a patch in their garden where a shed used to be and will fit my car on it nicely . . . . . only they don’t know that yet

If it's a popular model or that of a higher than normal spec you'll likely make more money breaking it and selling parts on the usual auction sites or owners forums.
If it's an unpopular model or a very basic spec you'll find it a lot harder to shift the parts in a timely fashion, so need to have storage space for the car or items.
I broke an old MK1 1.1 Punto, other than panels, seats, glass and a few bits of trim I didn't shift a great deal but got more than local scrapyard offered. If it had been a Punto GT there would be a lot more performance related bits and uprated trim etc that someone with a base model would be after. After I finished stripping I had the scrapyard collect the shell free of charge and V5 completed accordingly, they'll get money for the metal and I was happy as it was gone.
