Drove a colleagues 3 Series today and noticed it had black cloth headlining and pillars. Combined with the rear privacy glass, the cabin was a nice place to be, almost cocoon like.

Has anyone had any luck with dyeing their headlining or is it best to change it completely for black material?

Call me odd but I loved it.

Had it on my old Cupra R, gave the cabin a real "bunker" effect, but then so do the super dark tints on my current Civic Type R behind the driver to the back, but not as much as the completely black interior of the Cupra. Gave the car a very warm, cosy feel, apart from in summer when it was just plain boiling inside if it had been sitting in the sun!

My e46 has black headlining and I really like it, as you say, it gives a more enclosed feel to the car.

I would probably try and get some black headlining rather then trying to dye the current one. Don't want to end up with a funky tie dye type pattern!

My p.o.s golf has a black headlining which does create a sort of 'cocoon' effect, but at the same time the roof comes down so I sort of have both sides of the spectrum.

Doesn't stop the car being st though. It's really st.

I don't know that you could dye your old headlining, besides, if you're going to go to the effort of taking the headlining out in the first place then you might as well just replace it with a genuine black one. Eventually you'd probably sell the old one to offset the cost of the new one (or at least that's what you can tell yourself/the OH).

Agreed, dark head linings are lovely. My Focus has one and it's so much better than the grey / cream in more mundane versions! No idea how you might go about changing the colour, though...

Can anyone recommend a headlining supplier.

Cheers.

I take it you aren't keen on your Golf then? winksmile

My hardtop for the Z3 has a black headlining (as does the soft top thinking about it!) it makes a totally different feeling to the car compared to the roof down version. A colleague has the black headlining in his 3 series, which is otherwise similar to mine with a standard off white one, it feels almost like you need to duck when sitting in his car compared to mine. Surprising what a different colour can do.

I wouldn't want to attempt to recolour one though, sounds like a PITA job and taking one out (and particularly refitting) one isn't an easy job either having done an old MGB one years ago.

does it not risk making the interior a bit gloomy/oppressive on long journeys?
