I think it was starting to derail into NSFW territory as it was always bound to do. Looking back at the notes it's had quite a lot of posts deleted and as such was closed.
It wasn't really self moderating! We all know what is and is not acceptable (pictures wise) for this site. Quite a lot of people seemed to forget that...

I agree a few comments were going a bit far, however unless they got deleted I didn't see any pictures that wouldn't appear on the front page of a "normal" magazine?

Considering there was no warning, I think an instant shut down of what was proving to be an enjoyable & popular thread seemed a bit premature. If there was so much doctoring surely the Mod's could have put a little reminder to those treading the line?

The mod done a terrific job of explaining why it was shut, fair play to him.

We've closed threads like this before, and the reason was the same as now; you can go and perve over pictures of day time television presenters in many places on the internet. We don't feel the need to add PH to that list.

There are many webpages out there to discuss business/watches/sport/aeroplanes/cooking, however them threads still exist and even have their sub categories here. Reading my original post in the above thread would reveal whether it is for you or not instantly, if its not, leave, if it is enjoy (as many were). Is this a Forum for pre-teens or what? The most sexually explicit thing I seen was a thigh!

Im sure a vast majority of people would agree with me if it was put to a vote.

That thread was going to have to stick VERY closely to the OP subject matter to survive. A few people picked that it was suspect and tried to keep it legit. It turned into an irrelevent wkfest, as most of them do. Popularity alone isnt a reason to leave a thread open. Im amazed it got as far as it did. The title alone would have sent mumsnet into a frenzy.

Popularity isn't a reason to leave threads open? On a forum that I assume makes most of its money from advertising, advertising that is influenced by visitor numbers? Surely all forums success and mere existence is based on popularity...

If it was ass, tits and fanny everywhere fare enough, it wasn't though, like I said any of them pictures could have featured on the front of your weekly TV mag!

Why does it matter what Mumsnet thinks? I dont suppose GreenPeace would be happy with 90% of the forum but there we go.

Oh come on, that's going a bit far.

There are plenty of people on here browsing from work networks. We have to be really careful with flesh images because if we start to fall foul of corporate firewalls then we're dead in the water. We get plenty of complaints about these sort of threads from users for precisely that reason.

Add to that the fact that the language on the thread was getting pretty close to the bone (witness "I can't help thinking I'd have to bludgeon her to death with it just to stop her" FFS) and that our mods have more than enough to do keeping on top of all the other threads which are SFW, and we just don't want this sort of stuff on here.

Sorry, but you can go elsewhere for precisely this sort of content, including the site of that Lucy Pinder stalker you refer to above. We think that there's more than enough good stuff which is pretty unique to PH to come here for without needing pics of Carol Vorderman or Andrea McLean. That isn't a new stance - we've always taken that approach.

I still stick by my original comment that a warning and decent explanation about why it was shut would have been nice. Imagine you was a new member reading that, you wouldn't have a clue?

Alternatively if you were a new member and saw that content, you might well think "well this place isn't for me."

These threads represent a tiny proportion of our traffic, and so I just don't think there's demand. Even if there were, having NSFW content so publicly puts you into a specific category of website - it opens you up to the possibility of corporate networks and consumer filtering software blocking you, advertisers choosing not to run ads on you, etc etc.

We have posted explanations of why we don't have this content in the past, and nothing has really changed since I'm afraid. Sorry, but the answer always seems to come back to "you can go elsewhere for this" on these sort of threads.

In the main I think we can all understand the Pistonheads rulings. It is after all a business and it does not wish to invite unnecessary controversy. Which any business is entitled to avoid.

I did wonder about this topic when it started, because I thought it might raise doubts. Unsurprisingly, it did in the end.

I was actually impressed with the restraint on the posts to the subject which seemed to me to be reasonable and funny, generally. However I can well imagine the direction of the subject caused concerns amongst some readers. Such is life.

I wouldn't be sure of that. As Stuart has pointed out a lot of us post from work and what might get through on a weekly TV listing mag is not necessarily going to be suitable for work.

I work from 2 offices at one we have no net restrictions at the other its a lot more secure, imagine my surprise and horror when I clicked a link on a similar thread a while ago and it was blocked due to the link being classed as "Pornography" brilliant!! That gets logged as well, not that i give too much of a damn but still its not good, I will now not browse PH from that office just in case

I agree with Stuart, this website can't be all things to all people. So long as the majority of people on here are happy enough then the job is done.

As it happens the management's decision to remove the thread is a decision that enforces my comfort level here. Idiots get banned and topics that are of a questionable moral benefit get stopped.

Some people would call this being over sensative but I don't care, I like coming to a place where I can have a decent conversation with adults.

The argument of "Well put it in a NSFW section and don't go in there at work" doesn't fly as well.
Blockers work on the domain level normally and are often cross bussiness. So all it takes is enough people to "visit" the dodgy part of the forum and we get a block on the whole site.
It would also increase our search "association" with those topics, which in turn would increase our "black mark" potential with blockers and so on.

I try TBH your OP was borderline (As in, do we really need a thread about how some women look mucky?) and went down hill from there. Once people started posting up pictures of scantily clad women (and at least one nipple shot was removed) with "cor, I would" its time was short.
