Further to this http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... thread, I am considering the following due to circumstances:

- not purchasing an XC90 or whatever until October when the finance on our Civic is paid off (sensible head on).

- selling my S/C MX5 in the next few months as it is likely to get more demand in the summer than in October.

- getting the cheapest to run car I can find to tide me over for the 12 mile daily commute for around £1k.

Is this a reasonable plan?

If so, what would you get as the £1k runaround? Had a Fiesta and a KA before so something not Ford would be nice!

For a grand.

Put your postcode into autotrader with a 1k price, all cars and a 20 mile radius.
Buy something that has 12 months tax, 12 months MOT and some decent tyres.

I’d suggest you look at a private sale from a nice postcode – you have a better chance of getting a well looked after car.

How about a SEAT Toledo V5? Comfy interior, lots of equipment, very reliable, interesting engine with decent performance and quite good handling considering Mk4 Golf based, plus, has lots of room inside and a big boot. Can be had for under £1k!

I have got a £850 12 months mot and 6 months tax pug V reg 306 hdi.

So far spent 75 on a remap to 125 bhp and a few niggles, but as you can buy a whole 306 for about 250 - 300 pounds getting parts shouldn't be a problem.

So far 45 - 50 mpg and nice and comfy and handles as good as any hot hatch. I ran one for 2 years ragging it daily and never had any issues.

Why wouldn't a 306 be reliable? The 306 diesels in particular go on forever, the DTurbo with around 90Bhp(?) is very economical and a good drive as well!

Something unpopular. E36 is a very good call, but IME the cheap ones are sheddy, on the whole you have to spend £1500 to get anything decent.

At the risk of boring everybody, my <£1k went on a late Saab 9000. Very comfortable, all the toys, quick, & anonymous. Only black mark is the fuel economy, but it's no worse than any of my other cars, and actually better on a run.

Exactly what nicecupoftea said, you need something unpopular, something dreary and typically un PH as they do not fetch good money. We have a diesel Mazda 323 that we picked up for £300 and a diesel Ibiza picked up for £700, both are proving to be reliable, good on fuel so they are out there to be had.

Mk 3 Golf GTI 8v. I paid £750 3 years ago and still have mine. had to replace a few things on it at MOT time but nothing that rendered it immobile.
Prior to that I had a 2.0 Mondeo LX which I got for £450 off ebay but I didn't much like it.
The local search for any car is the best option here. Japanese cars are often a good bet.

You mock him (badly), but he is right - absolutely 100% right. At 1k you dont buy on model/manufacturer/engine. You keep it simple and buy whatever looks good at that moment.
As has been demonstrated by this man ^^

That rock is inferior. I already have better rocks.

You may mock me as Captain Obvious, I prefer to think of myself as Captain Occam, also known as ‘The Razor’.

I said "unpopular", not "un-PH" wink It can be done - something fun and cheap that is uncool or that most people haven't cottoned onto! sonar

Thanks for the ideas chaps, liking the Primera GT / Micra thoughts. A nice simple motor is what I am after - no complex diesels or crazy electronics.
