So I was following a car up to a roundabout that made no attempt to give way and ploughed into the side of a van. bounced off and careered into a near by tree, all the while no attempted at the middle pedal was made.

so I pulled up and checked the driver was ok. by which time shes half out the car, which is steaming but she thinks its smoke. turns out shes a 75 year old lady, so quite frail. she gets out and starts walking around aimlessly while I dial an ambulance, all I did was open the door as it hit on the hinges so quite stiff.

Its pissing it down so get her to sit in my van, big mistake.

fast forward, paramedic in a Volvo shows up. he's not happy, 'who's put her in the van?'. when the police arrive, I am told that was a big mistake because if she has a spinal injury. they will have to cut the roof off. this has happened to a police sprinter in near identical circumstances.

so moral of the story is leave you old lady's in the rain.

I never even thought about this so bear it in mind.

To be fair I wouldn't have even thought about that. I would have seen a frail old lady wandering around who needed to be warm and safe and probably would have done the same thing. Don't beat yourself up over it.

I wouldn't worry, she was already out of the car and you're not a doctor. It might/would be different if you'd pulled her out of the car.

Thread recently with a roofless but otherwise undamaged F10 5-series came to the conclusion it had probably lost its roof in similar circumstances.

Health and Saftey gone mad! So if a police cas was first there and found a 75 year old lady wondering around, they'd have left her in the rain, just in case ?

Bonkers.

I am not worried guy's. its more the thought of my boss had the roof of my 2010 van with 20k on the clock been cut off! if I though she had in injury like that, I would have made her stay in the car and not move.

the police are right though because the people can appear fine but have major injury's once they have calmed down. just a word of warning really.

as for the two in the van that were fine and dandy until the ambulance approached. rolleyes make it a bit less obvious lads.

It's instinctive to try and help. I can understand their point but don't feel bad about it.
The car could have well gone up and then you'd be trying to extricate a slow-roasted gimmer which would be no fun for you at all.

Unless you're a trained first aider, you wouldn't know any different. Even those that are trained forget it.

When in doubt, do the right thing.
In this case, letting the old lady in out of the rain was the right thing.

It might turn out to be a problem later, but it’s the right thing at the time.

Everybody knows atleast one GILF hunter.

O/P, glad she was okay but it does make you wonder what caused her to crash and wander around aimlessly!

I was trained years ago, but never use it so I am pretty rusty. as she was up and about I never even considered it let alone they would get the cutters on my van.

I'm struggling to understand why you're worried they'd have taken the cutters to your van???

because if the paramedic's suspect a spinal injury they cut the roof off and lift them out without moving them? the copper said it had already happened to a police sprinter. and that I shouldn't have let he sit in their if didn't want a convertible.

Can you apply that logic to going to a strip club when your missis is mad at you?

If the misses is mad at me why would I want to turn up at her workplace?

I would have thought they'd only use the cutters if they can't get her out because the doors jammed or something?

apparently not. if they cant get the person out the door without bending their spine then the roof comes off. but what would I know I not a paramedic or a fireman with some big cutters. this is just what the copper's and the 2 paramedic crews that showed up told me.

Next time, just chuck her in the back of the van. Much easier to extract an old woman through the double doors, if necessary.
