Do I have to prove every 12 months that Im eligible to work in the UK under the provision of 'Asylum and Immigration Act'?

It depends on whether you have indefinite leave to remain in the UK or not. If you have time-limited leave to remain in the UK, you do have to be checked by your employer every 12 months. If there are no restrictions on you staying in the UK, 12-monthly checks are not required (one initial check at the start of employment is required).

British passport and citizen? If so, an one-off check is all that's required.

Seems my work wont take this as an answer and require me to either supply them with my passport (which has just expired) or a 'long birth certificate'.

No, that's right actually, what they're asking. Has to be a valid passport (ie not expired - appreciate that seems a bit silly)or (one of the) other documents on 'List A' is the full birth certificate. Once they've seen that once, you shouldn't need to produce anything again.

New job, or have they not checked before? Applies for employees since 2008.

No, been check numerous times before, looks like they check everyone no matter their circumstances every 12 months.

What a waste of time that is. That's the kind of thing that makes people think HR is a waste of money (and we're not wink)

I guess they are checking everyone so that they don't look like they are discriminating...
