Cost to repair?
Discussion
My friend just had an accident and has decided to settle outside of insurance (not sure if that's wise, but there you go)
The van driver he hit is taking his car to a local independent bodyshop to get it fixed, so how much roughly do you think he's looking at? He's worried they'll give a ludicrous quote.

cheers

Very largely depends where the damaged van is repaired. There are commercial repairers who would easily repair this f0r the £800 suggested, which seems a fair estimate to me. There are insurance repairers who could easily top £2000 on the same job.
Then there is the whiplash claim which could be thousands. Just the way insurance costs have become in the UK. Sadly to the cost of every motorist.

£800+ IMO
That's what I said to him, but the actual parts seem to be extremely cheap so I was wondering if I'd told him too high an amount.Steffan said:

According to the driver, as it's outside of insurance he's taking it to the same independent place where he got it resprayed, so I would assume they'd be fairly reasonable. As for whiplash, that's exactly why I would have gone through insurance if I was in his position. Although the guy was apparently very reasonable, you never can tell....Then there is the whiplash claim which could be thousands. Just the way insurance costs have become in the UK. I'd be surprised if anyone could repair that satisfactorily for £800 — new door, New bumper and maybe mounts underneath, 3 damaged sensors, checker plate, damaged O/S rear arch cover, painting and other stuff they may find.
Oh and some new letters and numbers for the number plate as they seem to be missing too
I'd say at least £1500 I'm afraid

I agree with Pig Skill here, however i think if you get it all done through a garage you will be looking more at 1800-2000. I'd say at least £1500 I'm afraid
I had an accident recently, got quoted 1500 - 1700 from 4 garages i went to, all i needed was new wing/bumper both sprayed, new slam panel and fitting it all. I got all the parts i needed from ebay saved myself £400 instead of buying ford brand new parts, and then got it sprayed for 300 and then i fitted it all for free! saved myself £1000-£1200.
Best bet you have if you want to save the cash is breakers yard and do the work yourself.

I don't see the damage on the O/S arch cover. New door and bumper certainly, But with a bit of luck it'll just be the center bumper cover (it's in three parts and the outer parts look undamaged from where I'm sitting). The bumper itself might not be damaged at all- I suspect the speed of the impact was lower than it looks judging by the pictures because of the way the ladder has impacted the door. The sensors are often fit for re-spraying if body coloured, usually they just pop out of the bumper. Oh and some new letters and numbers for the number plate as they seem to be missing too

As a retail job I'll stick to my original guess of £800+, possibly £1k... and as others have said, the insurance repair bill would be significantly higher.

According to my friend, he inspected it pretty thoroughly and the only parts that appeared damaged were the door, middle bumper and sensors. Sounds to me like it definitely won't be going through insurance, and after just speaking with him, sounds like he'd be fairly happy with a £1k quote, but balked at the £2k one!As a retail job I'll stick to my original guess of £800+, possibly £1k... and as others have said, the insurance repair bill would be significantly higher.

£100 for second hand door, same colour
£40 for second hand bumper section
An hours labour to fit
Sadly, it never works out like that.
Yeah, from having a quick look on eBay that appears to be what it'd cost. Seriously doubt he'd be happy with that though £40 for second hand bumper section
An hours labour to fit
Sadly, it never works out like that.

surely its cheaper to just go through the insurance? its not like his premium is going to increase as much as anywhere near the price it will cost to get it fixed privately.
Well considering his age, if the repair was only £1000 then it would be worth it, as the increase in premiums over the following years would exceed £1000 (but not by very much). I'm actually the same age as him and personally I'd have gone through insurance mainly because of all the horror stories you hear about whiplash claims etc, and also because I wouldn't have trusted myself to make an accurate estimate on how much it would cost to repair the van.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
