Anyway we ve just arrived back from Donington Market, to find the old boy over the road and his son pushing his 58 plate diesel zetec s up and down the road trying to bump start it.

I casually pop over and say would you like me to come and jump it with my leads?

And the silly old cock comes out with listen hear sonny ive been starting cars like this for longer than you ve been walking this earth.

Bit dumb struck i replied oh right ok well thought id come offer enjoy your pushing, that was 20 mins ago and yup they are still at it.

Awaits the cool starry bra.

Trying to bump start a diesel is a bit like a dog chasing parked cars. Stupid...

Few, if any, will start without glow plugs running in cool temperatures and if the battery's that flat that he needs to bump or jump it they wouldn't work anyway. Also, with the massive compression ratios that diesel have, the parked car analogy applies 'cos the damned thing virtually stop when the clutch is released in mid-range gears. Cue loose front teeth when you run into the back of the suddenly stationary car.

Apart from anything else at that age it'll be a 'modern' diesel with (possibly) common rail injection. The old mechanical injection ones might bump with sufficient speed, but the electronic injection ones are a different matter.

I have never owned a diesel. Why cant they push start?

Whenever I see someone push starting a car I always get out and help. I wouldnt knock back an offer of a jump start though.

Most diesels have an electric fuel shut off valve that stops the engine when you switch off. No battery power, the valve cant open, no fuel to the pump. You can push the thing for ever but it'll never start without some juice in the battery.

Was thinking the same. I once had a diesel Golf, after a while the starter wouldn't engage so for a week I used to push start it myself, always making sure I parked facing down a slight slope hehe

Suddenly dumping the clutch might cause the timming belt to jump a tooth or two. Which would completey balls it up.

We managed to push start a Mercedes Vaneo (2.2 cdi) last year, so it is possible. You do need a little juice in the battery though for the electronics, but then again, a completely flat battery is pretty rare.
Most direct injection diesels will start without glow plugs at temperatures around freezing, it only takes a few turns of the crank to get the combustion chamber hot enough through compressing the air alone.

Actually, the Vaneo example above was started in reverse, 4 blokes pushing. The back wheels almost locked, but it was enough to kick the engine into life.

However, jump leads are easier, saves all that hard work.

Eh?

How is that different to suddenly hitting the starter motor?

Or when a slowly turning motor fires?

The only time I've ever seen that urban myth playing out is when someone tried bump starting it in first gear (rather than reverse) when rolling backwards.

The reason it happened was because the engine turning the wrong way wasn't working the tensioner the right way, so the belt became loose.

Pushing the car forwards in a forwards gear won't do that (unless your tensioner's shagged anyway).
