968CS Starter Motor and erratic idle problems
Discussion
The starter motor on my 968CS is sometimes "lazy" when the car is hot. It also has an occasional fault where it is turning, even after the ignition is turned off and can take anything from 1 to 5 minutes to stop. While it is spinning, you can't start the car. After it stops spinning the motor sometimes just "clicks".
Does this need a new starter motor or can it be refurbished. Is there anywhere recommended? I live just north of London.
I also have a very low and erratic idle and when I lift off with say the steering turned (i.e. using the power steering) the engine often stalls. It seems to idle at only about 600-700 rpm.
Thank you.

get the starter motor refurbed, any competent auto electrical repair centre can do it, expect to pay around £125 ........ much cheaper than a new one.
That should sort how it operates but is your battery up to scratch as well? NB One tip is to always fire the car up with your foot on the clutch, this disengages various things and makes it easier for the engine to turn over on the starter.
Finally, low tickover is a puzzler. These cars have an ECU which controls tickover very accurately so I am starting to think of things like a duff spark plug, poor leads, dodgy dizzy cap, too much ordinary unleaded fuel!, or even worse things like lost compression on 1 or 2 cylinders.
Can you work your way through some of those? if not take it straight to Andy & James at Ninex in Maidenhead, they look after my 968 racecar and are a whizz at sorting such things.

Re the dicky tick over - I'd be looking at the idle control valve and associated vacum pipes for leaks. If you can, take the ICV off and clean it in carb cleaner inside and refit. From memory it is located under the inlet manifold so could be a pig to get at. Also worth carb cleaning the air mass sensor although this is delicate. Check all vac hoses for leaks, you can use carb cleaner to spray the pipes, when the engine splutters you've found the suspect leak.
Good luck!
Good luck!
