I recently upgraded my TV and bought a new combined Blu-Ray/Surround System to go with it.

I only had a standard DVD player previously. I bought my first BluRay disks (Alien Anthology) and on the box it had a logo saying true 1080p resolution. However when I play it the input dialog on the TV says 480p input. The system is a Sony BDVE280. Everything is connected with HDMI cables. Have I done something wrong or omited something? I have tried searching the menu but can't find any relevant settings.

When I watch Sky HD it says 1080i or 1080p in that box so I can get it on that. The picture is still very good so I am not that bothered but wasn't sure I was getting the full effect.

Check either the input,or output settings on the TV and player. Sounds like on or the other is out of kilter.

It sounds like you haven't changed the output setting of the player.

How strange. Normally sony stuff detects and switches straight away. It doesn't say that on the movie menu does it? If you go to the settings there is an option in there. Same on the PS3.

You haven't stated, but if you're doing all this buy one of these...

Thanks all. I went through all the settings on both the Blu ray and the TV last night and I can't find anything. I also checked on the film menu screen and there was nothing for output. I will read through the manual and see if there is anything in there. Its odd because the picture is fantastic but the info doesn't look right.

DamianBPhoto - The surrond system is combined with the blu-ray so no need for an optical cable. I have one between Sky HD and the systen though.

Is there nothing similar to this on the player? It should have something to do with either TV resolution, output, or something like that. It could even be under HDMI settings.

You may also need to look on the TV and tell it to use 1080p.

When the disc starts it displays a message saying this disk has been produced to the lastest blu ray standards etc. and that your machine might need updating.

I have checked the Sony website and there is a firmware upgrade from March this year so I guess the next thing is to try installing that.

I'm not sure that would make that much of a difference, to be honest.

Ha, found this on the Tips section on the Sony Website:

The HDMI jack outputs 480p/576p video signals only.

Did you execute "Easy Set UP"? Please execute it if you had not done yet. When you enjoy the HD image, please set to “Output Video Format" “Component Video"/“HDMI" and select the resolution of 720p or more.

I just looked in the manual on the website and it does indeed appear to be completely retarted smile Every player I've owned lets you change the output resolution in the Display Settings but not this one.

Excellent. At least it is the machine that is retarted and not me.

Well at least not in this instance.

Thanks for all the tips chaps - it is fixed! I have now realised what I did. I bought the unit before I bought a HD telly so it was set-up for SD. I re-ran the setup program and set the output to 1080p.

Tested it with the first Alien BD and am pleased to report Sigourney Weaver's peanut smuggling scene is clearer than ever before!

I prefer 720p to 1080i. 1080i can still get combish.

No I made a mistake there. I only get 1080i. I read somewhere that no-one broadcasts 1080p because it takes up some much bandwidth or something.

BBC HD is sometimes 1080p. Caused problems with some Vs (Sony etc.) when first broadcast. My Sony KDL-37EX503 suffered brief loss of sound everytime the the resolution changed from 1080i to 1080p. Sony issued a firmware update that solved the issue.
