Why should/shouldn't I and what should I look out for? Any tips?

Thought it might be fun. Plus I can tow it on my stupid licence.

I quite like the look of this (the black one, not his mate's ally one). Once the other boat's finished, I'll be project-less!

Langy's self built teardrop is lovely.

Teardrop's are great, and better than a tent by a long way thumbup

I'm caravan-friendly. That teardrop one looks nicer to sleep in than a tent but it's hopeless to get dressed in. Really if you're gonna do it, make it a useable size.

Why do you need to get dressed inside? Surely it's enough to be able to get your underwear on, and if it's raining heavily then a bit of wriggling inside isn't going to hurt.

I'd sooner have that than any kind of caravan or tent where it was possible to stand.

I did some work for a caravan manufacturer before I moved to the other side of the tow ball. Not sure it it'll be in any way relevant to building a custom van, but if you want to build several of them I can show you how to get quality down to the level the market expects.

Happy to help with CAD stuff, if you need it.

Very interested in this, I have a workshop including plasma's, welders etc plus the staff to do it.

Will research this further, a great side line for when standard work is quiet.

Oi - that was my idea! tongue out

Once I've got the current projects out of the way it could be fun. Build next winter to tour next summer, providing I can find the space smile

Captain Muppet - Thanks for the offer, I may need to call on your skills. CAD skills, I can assure you that producing sub-par work is something of a forte of mine! Wonder if I can get a cheap version of Solidworks/Catia...

Holy thread bump Batman!

OP, how did you on with this? I'm seriously considering a teardrop caravan of some kind, they look like great fun and so much easier to get away than a tent. There are some real expensive ones out there, but cheaper self build kits like CHUKI.

EDIT: I guess this can be moved to the caravan sub forum now smile
