I have a problem. Please help, if only to sympathise as the sun is out, the temperature is up and the Hertfordshire countryside is yearning for the scream of Griff sports exhaust at 5500rpm.

There's a horrendous noise coming from my offside rear hub. When it first happened earlier today I thought the exhaust had dropped onto the road - it was a real metal on concrete sound. I thought it might be the brake/caliper and disassembled it to find no obvious problem. Still a racket. So I tried turning the wheels without the caliper and brakes fitted. The noise comes from the hub itself. A real metal on metal grinding sound. Very loud. Bad enough not to want to move the car more than a yard or two.

The noise comes and goes with the turn of the road wheel. So at, say, 12 o'clock on the wheel turn there's the grinding noise, then clear for the rest of the rotation. The wheel is almost impossible to turn by hand when it starts to grind.

Here's me thinking new half shaft or worse still new diff (though the sound is not coming from the diff).

With PH3 next weekend and every decent dealer booked out for the next 3 weeks I'm looking at a very sad Sunday 9. Go on, someone give me some good news...

Commiserations. From the symptoms I would suspect a collapsed wheel bearing. Not expensive, and any local mechanic should be able to replace it for you (or you could do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined).

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Thanks Peter.

I believe the donor car for rear bearings/hub etc is the Sierra. Anyone any idea which model I should ask for?

Sorry AF. Could'nt resist....

If you need any help, if indeed it is the bearing, and you are doing it yourself, you know the number bud.

C'mon, someone get serious. Where should I go for a rear wheel bearing and what's the part number?

Don't ask for much do I? Eh?
