Importing from Dubai into the UK

Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section.

I have seen a really nice American car that is up for auction in Dubai. The price is around 50% lower than the equivalent UK spec model. I understand that there are some alterations that need to be made such as indicators, headlamp adjusting etc however I'm not 100% sure what the process entails.

Can someone give me a heads up as to what is involved, shipping, conformity certificates, registration etc. I'd love to hear from who have gone through this process before or are thinking about it and what obstacles they have faced.

Shipping, import duty and VAT will all need paying.

No such thing as a CoC for an American car so it will need to be IVA tested. If it's been modified in any way it will fail.

You'd need proof of ownership to be able to register it.

Would I have to register the car in the UAE even though I am not a UAE citizen or ex-pat living there?

What kind of car is it? Might be a lot easier to just by it fromt eh US and import from there.

It belongs to a friend of a friend in Deira. I have done business with him before through our mutual friend but that was laptops and mobiles etc. This is uncharted waters, for me anyway at least. He is an honest guy but neither of us want to get stung with regards to taxes, duty etc.

If its a GCC spec car I could find out what history the supplying dealer has on file for it if you give me the VIN.

Can't help on the export/import query, there is a company that specialises in this but I'm buggered if I can remember the name.

Thanks dxtbtiger, I'll try and find as much information as I can (although I don't want to look as though I'm snooping too much, you know the mentality out there). I'll also re-post this in the Middle East section too
