Hi All,

Mrs Ice expressed an interest in a mini last night and we looked at various models on the autotrader site.

I think we would opt for a 2009-10 model.

Is the additional size & boot, really much better than the mini hatch?

The thing is, we have two boys aged 6&9, we want enough room for them in the back. So is the advantage of the clubman worthy??

Currently she has a Merc C200cdi avantgarde estate auto.

What should we look out for, problems, specifications & options???

Thanks

I work at a dealership not a million miles from you.

The extra space in a clubman comes mainly from the boot, there may be slighlty more room than a hatch in the back but not a lot.

The spec packs are Pepper pack then Chili pack, the best one to go for will be Chili as this will give you ½ leather and a few other bits. Bare minimum to go for would be Pepper pack.

Let me know if you need any more info.

My mother has one on an 08 plate and I think she quite likes it. It needed to be big enough for the Dobermann (seats down) and economical enough for the work run. Averaging 55mpg I believe (50% city driving, 50% dual carriageway). It won't set any records, but it's pretty nippy, drives very well and doesn't sound all that bad from the inside.

The boot is still small with the seats up (100 litres more than the standard car), but I think the back seats felt more spacious in the Clubman. The thing about having one door at the back isn't an issue, you just treat it like a 3 door hatchback, the seats fold forward. The back seats and boot will be nothing like the C-class though, if that's what you're looking for. My mother has hers with the seats folded down almost all the time. The boot isn't big enough to hold a weekly shop for a family of 4 and 1 big dog on it's own.

Good car, just not all that spacious. Wouldn't be big enough as a family car for us.

Hi

We have owned three minis, and our current one is a clubman. We find the space in the rear seats and boot to be a vast improvement over the standard Minis. We have a two and a bit year old daughter and she loves the Clubman. Obviously she is still using the full car seat, but seems to have plenty of room. Also, when Grandma comes for a ride she finds the space in the back usefully bigger.

The boot space is still small, but with the false floor up you can fit three average size holdalls in the space. We have just returned from a weeks holiday in Devon and purchased a roofbox for ours which usefully increased the luggage space to fit bikes, prams, tennis gear, footballs in etc. this left the back seat spare with luggage in the boot.

Not heard any real horror stories with the diesel units. Ours likes a drink of oil but other than that has been great and reliable.

I owned a Clubman Cooper D for 6 months (Nov 11 - April 12). Covered 10,000 miles and it averaged 56mpg. I didn't need it for the family, it was simply available at the right price and had the "perfect" spec... Full heated leather, climate, sunroof, stripes/flags, upgraded stereo, bluetooth... Plenty of space with the bigger boot, for carrying my niece around occasionally.

I would thoroughly recommend it, and I happen to think it is much better looking than the hatch!

I also prefer the look of the clubman, over the hatch and you dont see many on the road !!

Former classic Mini owner and Mini Miglia racer, with two new MINI's - a One D Clubman and a Cooper SD Convertible.

The longer wheelbase definitely improves the ride and adds lots of useful extra rear legroom and space, which enables us to fit the rest of the family inside our Clubman all at the same time comfortably.

We love the Clubman splitdoors and their remote open facility, and we love the clubdoor being on the drivers side - it's so convenient for dropping your stuff in behind your seat when getting into the car, and my 6ft teenage son can also get out from behind me, without me having to leave or even move my seat!

We've done long weekends away with all four of us and our luggage comfortably, thanks to the no-cost two seat rear seat option which gives maximum rear seat comfort for two.

Resist cars with sports suspension and big alloys imho, they handle more than well enough as standard. We exchanged the 17" alloys that came with the Chili pack on our SD, for smoother riding 16" alloys & tyres plus £400 of accessories from the dealer to make up the difference.

Still monstered the M5 and the supercharged Mustang Cobra through the twisty bits on the last PH run on Sunday morning though, thanks to the superb handling of the SD on standard suspension... smile

Whatever you do though, don't get one with run-flat tyres - they ruin the ride, are heavy, noisy, tramline, skitter over bumps, and are altogether awful.

How can you tell they are run-flat tyres?

Do they state it on the side wall?

Yep, it will be written/stamped on the sidewall.

Yep - runflats will usually say "RSC" somewhere on the sidewall

We have a clubman cooper D until last month. The rear comfort is decent and much bigger than a regular mini. Beware access though, it was hopeless for my elderly in-laws. Traded it for a countrman SD (with runflats, don't do it, they're way too hard). Our Clubman returned 55MPG pretty easily.
