I know...sorry...

He wanted a Landy (has no spanner abilities and NEVER changed the oil in his last car, just kept topping it up as it burned it....and the cambelt was about 100k overdue) which I have convinced him a) isn't realistic for 2k and b) wouldn't end well...

So what sensible hack for sub 2k, less the better! Doesn't have to be a DERV burner as mileage is nothing, just reliable and cheap to run.

My suggestion, Focus maybe? older Golf or Polo?

Don't want to suggest French as he's a mate wink

probably something japanese, and if you want to get technical, something with a non interference engine, as running any interference engine cam belt more then 100k over its limit is gonna end in very expensive tears at some point..

Honestly though, whatever you recommend him, try and get him to service his hack a bit better.

Deaf ears mate frown He came round once and asked why the engine was rattling like the metaphorical skeleton in the biccie tin....dipped it and literally nothing on the stick! How it hadn't seized got knows!

Bless him, he doesn't "do" cars frown

Honda Accord. Literally bombproof. Alternatively, whoever said Avensis because of the cabby link, I see that and raise you the mighty Octavia. A gazillion Taxi's can't be wrong. smile

Got for the older TDI 110 in the Octiavia and you have a car you can run and run without lifting the bonnet at all.

I wonder if people are getting bored of me suggesting these two cars, as i've done them endlessly on similar threads. But they seem to fit the bill so either a SEAT Toledo V5? or (an early) Lexus IS200?

Both are fairly bombproof and reliable mechanicals.

Def Japanese smile

Just put a 'belt on the missus' 00 CRV. It's first one I think, at 130k, so will last at least that again. Everything always works, even the aircon, never uses any oil.

He can have that at well under budget hehe

MX5? Non-interferance engine and I've been actively trying to kill mine with abuse for 5 years and it's still fine. It even did 5 miles with no radiator fitted.

Or a Honda, if he likes girls too much for an MX5.

Or one of those Suzuki jeep things that offroady types won't shut up about.

How about a Fabia, early one with the 1.4 MPi engine. That's just a re-bored version of the bullet rpoof old 1.3 skoda used before VW took over. It's definitely chain driven and I think it's a push rod engine too? Bomb proof....

Got to be 90's Jap as already suggested. My uncle bought a 1.6 Sunny estate and ran it for a few years on peanuts, brilliant revvy engine and nothing went wrong on it.

Try finding an Almera, Primera, Sunny, Avensis, Corrolla, Civic, Accord that some old fella has had since new.
