I bought my Boxster almost 12 months ago (non OPC) and now that the 12 month warranty it came with is about to expire I'm thinking of adding a 24 month 'Stand Alone' OPC warranty, however the last (major) service on my car was carried out at a non OPC garage.

I thought that in order to be able to add a 'Stand Alone' OPC warranty I would need to have a Major service carried out and keep my fingers crossed that nothing else was identified as needing replacing etc, but wouldn't then need to pay for the 111 point check. I've just spoken to my local OPC dealer and they were unsure whether I would need a major or minor service, but were adamant that I would need to pay for the 111 point check on top of the service and warranty price - is this right?

I'm in two minds what to do - its only done 7k miles since its last (major) service in Dec 2010, however I was thinking of getting it serviced now simply to ensure that I am not without a warranty on the car (987.1 3.4S). My fear now is that I end up paying for a Major service (will they also insist on changing the brake fluid at a further £150?), £216 for the 111 point inspection and then they identify more work which is required before I can even add the warranty.

If I lived somewhere more convenient I'd probably be tempted by one of the non OPC maintenance schemes however non are really that convenient and I've checked the prices of Warranty Wise, Warranty Direct and they're very similar to OPC prices, albeit they probably wouldn't cover OPC labour rates and have a maximum single claim limit.

Any opinions welcome. Thanks

You shouldn't have to pay for both the service and the 111 point check. I twice renewed my warranty and both times the check was waived as it was done at the same time as the service, the first one was a minor service, the second one was a major service.

As suggested, I would try a different OPC for a second quote.

Cheers,

This is a debate I keep having with my alter ego. Do I go the OPC guarantee route with all servicing by them and all the bells and whistles - or do I save money, go to an indy, don't bother with a guarantee (approx £1k/annum) and hope that the engine does not go bang in the first 4 years.....

It seems that OPCs do not conceive any form of compromise between these extremes. And yes I know it is down to the insurance company that undwerwrites the guarantee.

Hmm - not that many OPC options in this neck of the woods, Newcastle and Leeds. Newcastle is my nearest and distinctly unimpressed with Leeds as they conducted an 111 point check at the time of purchase and completely missed the puncture repair near the side wall, which the MOT tester told me last month should never have passed an MOT previously (ie when the car was sold to me 12 months earlier). Even if they waive the £216 inspection fee I'm still worried what else they might find, despite the fact it was MOTd last month and has only covered 5k miles since the last 111 point check at the time of purchase.

Am seriously considering risking it for a few months and then a trip to Hartech (or sports and classic) later in the year for a major service, inspection and sign up to a maintenance program.
