A friend and I plan to borrow (not steal) a Ferrari 550 next week. We've got it for one day and maximum 150 miles, collecting from central London.
I've plotted a few tunnels in Surrey and Sussex, but wondered if anyone could recommend specific roads in either county to head for. Preferably fast, traffic free during the week and, er, not burdened with yellow boxes in the hedgerow wink

mm 150 miles doesnt get you very far, which part of London is it and therefore where would you likely get into Surrey? Until i digested the mileage i thought that it would be good to get down the a24 ( boring dual craiiageway) to the junc of the a272 and head west, from there you have stonking roads leading off it to the south that obviously take you towards teh coast and you can cut across many of those and head back up to the a272 and then north of that. We often use that a24/a272 junc a s a starting point, and i will have a few itn's kicking around that i could forwward you if you send me a mail....you'd then have to work out the mileage to and from there and cut/amend accordingly. mark.

A3 - A286 (maybe stop at Goodwood?) - A283 - A3. No tunnels, but a great loop - will take about 4 hrs, traffic dependent.

The only tunnel in Surrey is Hindhead but the A3 is just another boring d/c. Most of that county is a washout for decent roads tbh. Sussex has Southwick on the a27 (another boring d/c) and Cuilfail in Lewes (best echoes of any tunnel I know due to its height). It is between two roundabouts so you can do it both ways as often as you like. The fun way to get there is the B269, B2026 via Ashdown Forest then A22 and A26. Except for the short stretch of the A22 I have never encountered much traffic on that route.

The A24 then A272 suggestion is a good one, it's a good drive, I did it last weekend, very enjoyable.
If you swing off the A272 and take the A286 down to Goodwood you could nip into the Aero cafe for refreshments, which of course obliges you to go through the tunnel beneath the track twice (at least).
All boxes ticked and it'll come in around the 150 miles.

Thanks for the pointers. I'm familiar with the Ashdown Forest but initially dismissed it because it is largely 40mph? However, will have another think about it

Great suggestion, thank you. You're right that 150 miles isn't that far, but should be enough to get us from central London, out to Hindhead and back via the Sussex coast. Will let you know how we get on!

Correct. Just keep an eye out for the wildlife (mostly suicidal rabbits and the occasional deer).

I have never seen a scamera van and just once (in 40 years of driving those roads) a police car in the parking area by the junction at the bottom of the hill here. I think their presence was mostly due to it being a scorching hot day, Mr Whippy was camped there, and they fancied an ice cream. smile

Fair play. Although by far the best section of the A272 is from Midhurst to Winchester.
