Does anyone have any photos of the switches and the wiring behind the radio panel on the early Chimaeras?

Specifically I'd like to work out whether it is possible to separate the switches from the strips of "telltales" as I'm planning on moving the telltales up to the main dash and if the radio panel telltales can be separated from the switches then I'll get the holes for the telltales covered and filled before I get the penel reveneered!

Cheers

Phill, what do you mean by the telltales ? I have a 93 so the earliest of the early. I don't have mine at the moment but can snap you a pic when i get it back next week. I imagine you need this sooner but if you can wait then i can get you the pics over as and when !

Hi AJ,

Not in a massive rush at the moment as I'm waiting for some info back from the veneerers that I'm thinking of using.

What I'd like to get some photos of (as I haven't taken mine out yet) is the construction of the switches that do the hazard lights and side / head / fog lights - particularly how they are integrated in (if they actually are integrated in) with the lamps that are behind the "telltale windows" that have the left and right indicator repeaters, the M.I.L., handbrake warning, brake fluid warning and "information" repeaters and the fog / high beam / side light repeaters.

Basically what I'd like to do is be able to remove all those telltales from the radio panel and simply fill in and then veneer over the slots that are cut for them to mount in, just leaving the hazard switch (which is itself illuminated when activated) the three light switches and the radio.

I have already modified a later style main dash panel to accept some really nice looking warning lamps from CBS online that I plan to tap into the existing feeds that would drive the lamps down on the radio panel.

Cheers

Phil

LOL - it sounds like I may have to take my chances with what's going to be waiting behind there for me...

It does look like I will be able to just remove the existing telltales and veneer over the top of the slots but how it's all mounted to the back of the panel might be a bit of a 'mare...

Phil,

Take the radio out and you will see....

Got some more pics that may be of use -

My dash was thus....

Yellow circles are the brackets...
Blue shows you how I araldited them in the right place and then used a cable tie to ensure it sets int he right place (I used the ultra stuff - longer to set, but sticks like the brown stuff..)
Green arrows are where the screws go....

And how it looks as you offer it up to the dash....

Make sense?

Best of luck matey!! smile

Makes loads of sense thanks Phil & Mike ...

I reckon that all I need to do is pop out the two green lamps from the indicator switch plate and the seven red/green/yellow/blue lamps from the lights switch plate. (This will give me quite a bit more room to "move" in there.)

I guess I then need to cut a few bits of thin material and glue that to the back of the radio panel to provide support for filling in the oval cutouts with filler so that they can be veneered over without risk of the veneer sagging into the unfilled cutouts.

Was that ever in doubt?

Or as my mate proclaimed when I had mine up on axle stands doing all the brakes just after I bought it...

"It's a tractor ... I'l grant you it's a quick tractor but it is still a feckin' tractor..."
