So in the aftermath of my shed sort of dying I need something else.

Not spending more than £1000, looking for something that'll do a years motoring at least. Got to be a bit bargey, and be able to cope with regular trips back from Uni at Cambridge to Hull and back without being uncomfortable.

Currently looking at something like this : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-ROVER-75-CLUB-SE-1-...

Or a C180 had crossed my mind too.

Ideas?

A Volvo 850 or V70. If you can get past the image they are fantastic old buses: the seats are excellent, the stereo is good, they're quiet and refined at a cruise and surprisingly good fun in the twisties. They're also very reliable, easy to work on if things go wrong and replacement parts are available for peanuts. The only trouble with them is that they are a bit juicy, my dad's 2.5 10v is averaging about 28mpg and his old 2.0 20v did 22mpg.

HTH.

Cambridge to Hull is a long, dull motorway treck. I'd be looking for the devil's fuel for this sort of stint. An old diesel Merc would shunt along just fine

Saab 95? I had one a couple of years ago and they are comfy, well equipped and bargeish.... On a steady run from the LPT 2.0 you will see 40mpg.

Oooo-er. You should buy one, before those urges catch up with you in an embarassing way.

Right. Rover 75s... Am I mad for considering one?

1.8 engine.

Nice rebate from my insurance company of £200

Years MOT.

Looks good.

Looks like a good deal to me. Loads of room, comfy, will easily deal with you coming back from your trips to Cambridge, Hull etc wink

Citroen C5 auto diesel. Wafts like nothing else, even on crap roads & a ten year old one should be about your target price.

Is that the same 1.8 engine that has a bad reputation for head gaskets?

(Sorry if I'm perpetuating a myth smile)

Depends how it's been looked after though, dunnit?

We've had K series before with no ill effects.

It actually depends on how it was built.

Being that Cambridge to Hull is a 300 mile round trip, a good diesel will save you about £30 a go, handy IMO

Ours needed a new engine frown It's the locating dowells on the cylinder head. They are the weak point. If they've been replaced with the aluminium ones there shouldn't be any problem.

Can't see that...

Laguna averages 42 on that trip.
