Hi All,

Just been out walking Bosun and noticed a male Staffie off some way off
so called my boy and put him on the lead.
Called to the lady owner of the Staff and requested she do the same as 'Bo has already been attacked 3 times in the past, twice by Staffs and once by some small terrier....couldn't believe that one !

Said lady replied that her dog would be fine despite my concerns.

Lo and behold her dog ran over to where i was and i could just see what was going to happen by the way this thing
was tensing itself up, then wallop, straight for my boy's throat.
Cue lot's of shouting by both parties as the staff was trying it's best to rip Bosuns throat out.

Thankfully, being a Bullmastiff he was able to get it off then proceeded to pick it up by the scruff of it's neck and shake the living daylights out of it before letting go.

No real harm done to either pet thank god although it could of been a good deal worse.

Staff owner then starts threatening calling Police as her dog has blood coming from back of it's neck where Bosun got hold if it and telling me to pay vets bill etc.....

To say i am livid is an understatement!!!

Please understand this is not a rant purely against Staff's as 2 of my friend's have them and they are lovely dog's to Humans but i am at the stage now where i just do not trust them anywhere near my Dog.

Rant over !

My sister has a Staffie cross so I know what great dogs they can be, also had a mate with one, but they are one of the few dogs that I just don't trust. Maybe it's because where I am a high percentage of the owners are of a certain type.

My point excactly, i don't blame the breed as much as the owners.

Normally wouldn't have posted the tale on here but the Woman boiled my piss when she started about vet's bills !

Some/quite a few Staffie owners remind me of diehard smokers, they defend their 'rights' to the end and with no regard for the effect their fags/dogs might have on others.

Just out of interest, would it have been better if Bosun had been off the lead? I know my OH's Westie will get funny if he or another dog is on the lead, he's normally Ok if both dogs are free though.

I like Staffies but sadly they attract a scummy element of owner, you should have called police immediately, even if only to cover yourself, what happens when she goes to police saying your dog attacked her dog and caused it injury??

I wondered that but I bet it's a tricky one to judge if your dog's been attacked before. Was it on the lead for the other attacks too?

I would also report it to the police to be on the safe side. Get your version in first.

I don't think the police get involved with "dog on dog" attacks do they?

I must admit, I too don't trust Staffies at all, I dont really care who the owner is.

I have had 3 seperate incidents with Staffies (With 3 seperate pets, one killed my cat years ago in front of me when I was a teen.)

I have only known of one 'gentle' staffie, the owner being a friend of my dads, thats the exception.

In my experience the majority of the owners of this breed have them to try and make themselves look 'hard' - which incidently doesnt work.

If that had happenend to me I would have told the owner where to go in no uncertain terms and give them a a very real warning that if I'm out and see it again and it goes for my dog I'll have it.

As you can tell I feel quite strongly about this issue!!

Funny, I'm yet to meet an aggressive Staffy.

I suspect it depends on your proximity to a city centre.

Police won't care unless a person has been bitten.

OP, really sorry to hear about your dog, it's horrible when dogs fight. Just to put your mind at ease, you are not liable if your dog is on a lead and under control and he is approached by another dog off lead.

I'd look to giving your dog lots of positive experiences with others dogs now to avoid him becoming too hung up on it, and perhaps eventually becoming dog aggressive out of fear towards other dogs. Do you have friends with dogs who are good natured with others? Lots of gentle exposure to friendly dogs is the way forward.

Dont want to go into too much detail but have had this problem myself on more than one occasion which also involved an off lead dog if your dog is on the lead it is deemed to be under control if the other dogis off the lead it is the one which is not under control.
