Assuming these will be lowest spec / engine size variants what would you choose between:

Fiat Grande Punto
Hyundai i20
Opel Corsa

We're booking our rental car for a trip to Hungary in the summer, roads are crap once out of towns so ride comfort is key as is fuel economy.

The punto. The hyundai is bound to be extremely boring and feel cheap. The corsa/punto are both based on a similar platform so probably will drive rather similarly, and i just prefer the looks of the punto (and wouldnt be caught dead in a vauxhaul/opel)

I actually drove a punto 1.2 for an hour and it was quite enjoyable, less trouble keeping up with traffic than you'd expect.

Hyundai i20 looking best on specs / reviews. Geez, I'm bored looking at parkers reviews on hire cars, that I probably won't even be able to guarantee. Probably end up with an ageing Ford Fusion on winter tyres like last year.

I'll go against the grain here and suggest the Corsa. You didn't specify engine size for the Corsa (or Hyundai), but cc for cc I can promise it'll be better than the Fiat. You should be able to feel what is going on at the front wheels, and there will be a modicum of grip, and it shouldn't fall part.

The Fiat (bought HH junior his first car - a Punto 95hp '07 plate thing, was persuaded with sexual favours by the wife because she likes the way it looks) will have no feel, no go, no grip, and will feel like it's made of thin foil.
Roomy inside (much more than the others) and looks great, but everything else is st, honest.

On a separate note, where you off to in Hungary? One of my favorite places..

I've hired a Corsa and Hyundai i20 before. The Corsa was very much what I expected from a Corsa, but the i20 really surprised me. The plastics are a bit cheap, but it's screwed together well enough, it has more toys than you would imagine, pretty comfy, handled well and the 1.4 engine was quite keen. I expected a bit more than 42mpg from motorway/town/sub urban driving though considering my old Honda Jazz 1.4 did around 47mpg. I was quite impressed with it to be honest!

Have family in a town called Jaszbereny and using the car to do some travelling, probably more to the south and west of the country. I'm half-Hungarian so nice to see some of the country, it is a really nice place, very varied.

It's quite rare that you can actually book/receive a specific model. It's usually a 'group' that you book - so you can get anyone of the above. (Unless it's a higher class group of course).

You think you can choose?

Last year we were promised a fiat 500 (the on line form gave a choice, and the booking conformation "confirmed" it).

Obviously, we landed up with a fiat ..... Punto.

Actualy, it pleasantly surprised me.

I am not sure future owners will appreciate the fact that it did several hours at a time at full throttle without lifting off, but is was fun chucking it around the twisty bits. Quite a lot of body roll, massive understear and a very eager ABS system, but it was all part of the holiday entertainment. As it was of such low power, it was absolutely crucial not to slow down for anything, even hairpins..... What could possibly go wrong?
