which should i buy? ajp/speed 6
Discussion
Buy the best car you can find for your budget without worrying about the engine it has in it. The V8 and the SP6 will provide you with plenty of power and fun. Try a few out and see what you prefer.
Personally i would be looking at chassis condition, suspension, clutch and general condition before I decided on the engine but a rebuilt engine would be near the top of my list. Having just forked out on one I no how expensive this can be!!!!.

Unlucky a few times by all accounts!!!!!!!
You seem to take great delight in knocking the SP6 I would have thought someone who had experienced a few AJp engine failures would appreciate that no tvr engine is without it 's issues.
Just surprises me that fellow TVR owners can find some enjoyment in others missfortune.
Thankfully speed six owners do not rejoice when AJP engines give up.

Natben, it's only banter, there's no malice in it. OP, try both and see which one suits - you'll no doubt find that either engine will offer you a big step up in terms of performance from your Chim. I have next to no experience of the Speed Six so I can't offer any advice there, but after circa 1 year and 5000 miles, the 4.2 AJP engine in my Cerb has been the most robust part of the car (touches every piece of wood in sight).
Buy a car from someone who sounds like he knows what he's talking about.
Someone who's informed but doesn't rattle on.
Hopefully go to a Club Meeting and find someone who is knowledgable and get that person to go along and review the seller AS WELL AS the car.
Although I secretly wanted the 'Big Willy' one I, in fact, tested more 4.2s than 4.5s but each one had some, little thing on it that I didn't like.
Go and see/try a few. One of them will make you her friend.
Good Luck

Make sure it's got a new/recent Clutch

Aww that's not fair, I have been driven in a Tuscan 4.0
& they are fantastic & you cannot knock the engine sound. Not better than the V8 sound but still just as infectious in a different way
I know its old but still sounds amazing

The 4.5 V8

This + make sure you drive as many as you can. I ended up buying the cleanest/most expensive I could afford as it was in great condition and felt tight. My willy kept telling me to buy a 4.5 but I bought a 4.2 which on the late cars turns out to be a 4.5 with a 4.2 induction if that helps confuse you Personally i would be looking at chassis condition, suspension, clutch and general condition before I decided on the engine but a rebuilt engine would be near the top of my list.
