Gents,
A good friend of mine wants to swap his original rover gearbox into the better T5 gearbox.
Car is a '93 Griff 500.
What does he has to look out for ?
Propshaft?
Gearbox mounting?
Gearshift position ?
Speedo cable?

Can this be a clear fit or are modifications necessary?

Please advice

kind regards
William

Right... changed mine from an LT77 box to a T5 ..... mine being a 4.3 Precat.

I paid a garage to it, and frankly for the cost I would say it wasn't worth it... along with the other numerous issues it caused.

Need to get the right T5 box, as the gear stick position comes up in different places and could end up with having to cut and retrim centre transmission tunel leather (think we used a Tuscan gear box on mine).

You'll need a different bell housing, and from memeroy something needed to be done with the prop shaft.

We then needed to get the speedo to work as the rover box runs the speedo, whilst the T5 boxed ones run from the diff..... this was night mare, as tried all manner of electronics to get the diff to run the existing speedo... alas none worked. Remedy new speedo working of sensors fitted, but broke dash veneer taking out speedo, as was glued in place.

T5 ----benefits none really apart from having a more reliable (apparently) box and "notchier" gear change but more expensive to repair when they do go wrong

LT77...had a much better (longer) second gear which I loved.

Mine was done by the factory prior to them selling it so no issues for me to deal with. The stick sits higher than a standard Griff and someone did tell me it was a Tuscan box which could well be true.

Hi All,

My 4.3 pre cat has a T5 box fitted last year by Topcats, I can't tell you how they fitted it but It needed a new speedo, the gearbox is nice and smooth and the stick sits in the same place as the old box.

Not much help but you more than welcome to have a look at the installation.

Paul.
