As much info as poss please re 2013 Cayman :-)

I Px'd my Gen 2 Cayman some months ago as a complete set of tyres, 90K service and 1 year warranty extension were all coming up at the same time (£2-£3K)

Next step, either:

1. Go for a new 2013 Cayman

2. Keep my temporary, sensible, money saving current car (2011 BMW 320d M Sport Coupe. 600 miles on £80 of diesel +£100 road tax + £200+ saving a month on personal tax) and buy a S2 Lotus Exige for £20K and keep it as a garage queen.....

Problem is, I hate paying two lots of road tax, insurance etc.

Some years ago, I ran a new E46 330ci M Sport with an S1 Elise, but found I wanted one car that fitted all...hence my move to a new 987 Boxster. But these days, new Porsches seem to be getting so much more refined, the gap between them and BMW's seem to be closing in....

Not really advice required, just your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Frank

Ps. I cover 30k a year

Personally, I prefer having 2 cars for each specific job, ie; a motorway cruiser and a funster.

I just like the contrast.

Google 981 Cayman and there's lots of pictures etc. No recent spy shots as it is apparently finished and ready to go.

Here's one from Teamspeed ...

Should be previewed Q4 2012 and available Q1 2013.

Last time I visited my OPC, they said this (above) picture along with the others are as near as damn it, pictures were taken of the actual cars, airbrushed slightly and were meant to be insider only pics, only to end up accidentally leaked.

Personally can't wait for the launch night!

i am a big fan of caymans and was so looking forward to the 2013 model.BUT if it is anything like the 981 boxster with its bmw/audi type looks and ugly rear end and naff (vw/audi)type rear spoiler, not to mention the square edges on the wings it wont be a winner for me(not as good looking as an R).But i could live with all the flaws in its design if they had increased the power(say 330hp+ boxster/340hp+ cayman)like previous new models increased over the outgoing special,so i suspect like the new boxster the new cayman s will have less and only have 325hp and be slower than a caymanR
so i would rather have the outgoing beautiful caymanR with 330hp and less weight!

Do you find a 300hp mid-engine road car lacking pace ?

no but usually with more hp comes more torque and power across the rev range which with every new model has increased and improved the mid range!hence the new boxster s manual does 50-75mph in 5th gear in 6.7 secs which is slower than the outgoing 987.

just an after thought i wish porsche quoted the 30-70mph through the gears figures as this would tell you more about how the cars perform in the real world than a 0-60time.and i suspect the new 981 would be slower than a 987.2?if not definitly a spyder

There have been none performance comparisons done between new boxster and old. Porsche will of course promote the new but real track tests will tell the truth.

Fair enough, is that on the same gear ratio though ?

not sure but this figure has improved from the 986s(7.4secs).987.1(6.6 secs)987.2(6.5secs)and spyder (6.1secs)
new 981 (6.7 secs).

hence the 30-70 through the gears tells you more about real world road driving just like standing quarter times(the latter which new motorbikes have always been measured or they were in the 70s/80s) instead of 0-60 etc

footnote the 997gts is 5.6 seconds and the new 991s is 5.9 secs in 5th gear and that has 7 gears so 5th would be a slightly lower ratio than the gts?
so going back to the boxster s power output increase and my desire for more power, more power more flexibiltiy on the road!

I may be biased but I'd keep the BM and get an exige!

Although im looking forward to my mrs' 981S coming I couldn't bring myself(and she wouldn't let me) to sell my exige S

I have an X5(currently) for my daily drive

That sounds like the perfect fleet!

What engine do you have in the X5, plus any pictures of the Exige S please?!?! ;-)

Exige S is a brilliant car to have as a toy.
Certainly more of an event than any Cayman/Boxster can be.

I'll have to do it again one day...

I had a smart car up until 2 weeks ago but I've just given it to my step daughter, although kindly she has just brought it back so I can take it in for it's first service!

X5 is the twin turbo diesel and has been remapped to 345 (or so) Bhp. It goes in september/October because I have a new Audi RS4 coming.

Exige is awesome. Chrome orange. Running c275bhp. I'll put some pics up somewhere, on iPhone at the minute

This. I use a Focus Estate for work, carrying 'stuff', towing a trailer and parking anywhere. 911 for high days, holidays and fun.

That doesn't look a whole lot different to the current model, to me.
Apart from it being slightly chunkier.

Thank you, Sir!

Just been talking to a trader friend who said I would be better off keeping the BM and going for an Exige. Seeing these pictures - it really does clarify his and your comments!

Gorgeous car, and nice to see how it compares visually with the 911's...

Again, many thanks for taking the time to post the pictures.
