I applied online at HRMC a few weeks back for the relevant information required to complete tax returns online. The login details, etc were supposed to be on their way.

Today, I received docs from HRMC but all they've sent me is the Tax Return 2012 form for 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012. No login details to do this online.

Fair enough I thought, I'll just fill in the form, however, I'm stumped at the part where I'm suppsoed to fill in the 'Self Employment Pages'. These are highlighted in Orange in the 'guide'.

This form doesn't appear to have any 'Self Employment Pages'. It simply goes; Page TR 2, Page E 1, Page E2, Page TR 3 - TR 6. Are there a load of pages from the middle missing here?

You just need to register on this page:

https://online.hmrc.gov.uk/login?GAREASONCODE=-1&a...

You will then get all the log in details you need and can then file online.

Filing online is a milliontimes better than doing a paper version so I would definitely try to get your online account up and running smile

That's what I did, I've just done it again. I hit a wall at the 'activation code'.

HRMC said:
Within 7 days we will send you an Activation code through the post. Please go online and use this Activation code to activate your service.

YOUR ACTIVATION CODE WILL EXPIRE AFTER 28 DAYS, SO IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE USE OF IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
This is what I was waiting for last time and then the paper form has arrived today.

Just wait for the activation code. If it isn't with you after another week give them a call and request it again smile

No it isn't, that is for the P35 employer return not self assessment.

Ooops my bad, a combination of not seeing 'self employment' and spending my entire friday on the HMRC site sorting our P11 and P35 sent me a bit crazy!!

I had one, but lets say that we disagreed with regards to his pricing structure, or shall we say, lack of one.

Just an update. I eventually got the required information to log in online a few weeks after making this post. Then once I'd logged in and set everything up I had to wait even longer before any of the returns actually showed up on the system (for some reason they don't appear instantly?).

It was the 15th June when I eventually got to file the tax return.

Good news. No tax due.

Bad news. Today I got a letter demanding £460 for late filing penalties, apparently this is for the period 1st May 2012 to 15th June 2012 (£10 a day for 46 days). Is there any point trying to argue the fees or am I up st creek?

Were the penalties for late filing of 2011/12? I thought you had up until End Jan 13 for Self Asses online filing for that year?

Ignore me.....just re read and I understand this is for P35!

Unfortunately it's a Self Assessment for 10/11, I thought I'd already submitted this one at the start of 2011 but I guess that was something else (9/10 most likely!).

I've sort of lost track where I am with all of this after we moved at the end of 2010 and some other issues over the last 2 years and didn't learn there was an outstanding return until I started getting text messages at the end of April.

What I did not know until today was that they changed the rules with regards to penalties, prior to the end of 2011 they couldn't penalise you more than the amount of tax due (so no tax due, no penalty).

I am sure Eric's or my fees would be lower than the penalties you are now lumbered for!

I find it quite annoying that the cost of an accountant is the first thought going through most people's mind rather than I wonder how much I can save by using one...

I had an accountant, when I had a limited company. Now I'm just self employed doing freelance work but I've not really been earning that much over the last two years, certainly not enough to hire the services of an accountant! Like I said, I wasn't even aware there was an outstanding return until I started getting text messages. Then I phoned them up and they sent out the forms but for 2011-2012 (not the one that was outstanding) hence the issue with getting online in the OP.

With an effective accountant you would not have picked up £400 in fines. And I'm sure your self assessment return could have been completed for as little as £100.
