Those people are round the bend! A friend bought a 60k mile FSH car that was like brand new 5 or 6 years ago for backwards of £5k, and everyone thought he was mad! These cars Are Very rare and Very understood / underrated . They Were THE Sports saloon of their day ( just like a Manual 3.8 MK2 was in the 60s) .
They sold very well , partly due to the long waiting list for a new XJ6, but mainly because they were such a great drivers car . They were raced with considerable success Inc the Avon Tours ( Roger Bell , where are you now ?? ) and a Mathwall prepared 3.0 SI was also 1973s winner of Class 1 of the Castrol Saloon car championships .
According to one period road test , the 1974 on models were softened by suspension and damper mods, making them less of a drivers car, but still found it superb.
An Alpina modified SI ( MYP 9L , where are you now ? ) owned by BMW Concessionares , was featured in the May 1973 Edition of Motor Sport , the article was called " Five Doors Five Seats 150 MPH. The magazine loved it .
Restoration of any car isn't cheap ,I know the guys at 4 Star well and i dont think their 76 Polaris one will hang around long it looks lovely !

Yes the 3.0SI was the M5 of the seventies! if i received £ 5 for every story ive heard over the years of my mate bought ones of those in mint condition for peanuts ,id be rich by now!
People that dont know the cars do not have a clue about how good they are,and how exspensive they now are to restore. The german E3 club really know the cars worth ,they pay top money for really good cars, far more than E24 E28s E32 etc.I know im a member and have been there many times to there shows.

Jus Lurve that Country Life advert , Funny As ! The Neuclear age Lol !
It's typically aimed at the Only peoples who had a hope in hell of shelling out circa £5,495, which in 1972 was a huge sum of money, when just over 3 grand bought a new V12 E Type. You can just Imagine the type of house that an E3 would have been parked outside in the early 70s .
In 1982-84 I was a van driver in the east end of London ( Hackney, Stoke Newington , Stanford Hill etc ) and scruffy / down at heel E3s were common, driven mainly by Afro Caribean guys

Everything old and Bavarian costs alot to restore - E21? E12? E23? Why are these cars not being punted on at over-inflated prices? Purely speculators trying to hop on the classic car bubble IMO, which is a shame because it puts them out of affordability's reach for those that actually know how good they are. It's a good thing that they're still relatively cheap compared to the British junk that was around back then. The crap ones get broken up for parts to keep the good ones going, and they remain affordable. E9 Coupes are going up in value now but the E3 suffers from being a four door saloon and thus not especially desirable compared to it's equally expensive 2 door contemporaries - the seventies 6.9 Mercedes is still struggling to fetch proper money as well. The E3 3.0Si and E12 528's were rockets back in the day yet so few survive and there probably aren't enough left to form a 'scene'. Pity.Re the no of UK survivors its Anyones guess, but i have heard that only 5 SIs are on the dvla data base ? It's such a trajic shame So few survive . I know of a Celon Gold SI that I am going to view soon, I don't ever recall seeing an SI in this colour, it must surely be the Only UK survivor .
I recently sold a CSI to a guy up north who has had a very original 72 beige S in his garage for years.
I also know of a very original Manual 2500 with a lovely interior , that needs some tlc, it would make a really nice car, if anyone is interested pm me.

Of course E3s will not make coupe money, not so pretty, but far more solid than E9s any good E9 will probably had thousands spent on the body work. They were not very well undersealed. Also, MKII Jaguars have four doors and good ones are mega exspencive ,and just look at some of the Escort prices,an E3 is in another league ! and are getting rarer by the year (as are the parts of which will give some people a shock when they need them.Apart from body parts, check the injection prices, then people will start to understand !!!!
