Driving too fast in rain - idiots

I've today made a return trip to Glasgow via the M80/M9. Very heavy rain and a lot of spray and standing water, so I decided to keep my speed down to 60. I was amazed at the number of cars overtaking me at well over 70, some virtually nose to tail.

Accidents waiting to happen. Or perhaps it's the fact that I'm not a driving God?

I drove through a torrential downpor last week on a dual carrigeway, slowed down to about 40mph9even this was maybe to fast), wipers on full bore, couldn't see more than 20m at the most. Had at least 3 cars come past at 80+ headlong into oblivion.
On the same road last year in similar conditions a BMW came barreling past me only to hit a rather large piece of standing water, I think he ever so slightly scared himself as after getiing a bit sideways he was driving at 20mph getting in everyones way.

See it every day it rains heavily on the A1 J8 - 2. It's just shocking, 30m or less visability due to insane spray but nope, people still tailgate, leave their lights off and do 80+. Makes me very very nervous.

Tailgating is one thing but the numptie morons without lights beggars belief. When you flash them to make them aware they either get aggressive or look at you like a knuckle dragging Neanderthal.

I know what you mean, OP. I was driving back through a really heavy storm that was making a 2 tonne 650i feel twitchy at about 60, and cars were absolutely hairing past, like you say, nose to tail. Madness.

I always speed up when it rains. My wipers aren't very good, so I have to get a fair whack of speed up to blow the rain from the windscreen.

The road is grey, the sky is grey, the spray is grey - your car is grey and you have no lights on, how is anyone supposed to see you?

Couldnt agree more, replace rain with fog and I'm utterly petrified.

I've slowed down a lot over the years, even a "hoon" is a much more sedate affair than it used to be, suffice to say that even in the best conditions I rarely ever hit 1 lepton, and a nice sedate 50-60 in stty weather does me just fine. I like to think I'd be able to avoid any trouble at that speed, but as we all know it's the behind you that you really have to worry about.

Absolute piss boiler of mine tbh. Heavy rain + spray with no lights on should be a charge of driving without due care carrying points/fine punishment imo.

Much like when you're driving in the snow and you see some Chelsea tractor come blazing past, only to see them sitting atop the next roundabout or in a ditch at the next corner. No doubt they don't feel quite so invicible after that.

You need Rain-X, once you hit 70 you can turn the wipers off.

If I could get to 70mph in my car, I would be happy. I used RainX in the states n my G35. Bloody good stuff as long as you keep on top of it. Absolutely right about not needing wipers.

I wouldn't buy Rain-X, they sponsor Brake.

In my MX5, 70mph was enough to displace water from the screen. Much faster than that and the wipers tended to blow upwards off the screen!
