Have always wanted an M3....and am now in the position of being able to get one.

But, my commute to work will only be 10 miles or so, and even on weekends I will be using the car for short local journeys. I know that short journeys in cars such as an M3 is not a good idea, so should I settle for a 335i instead? Or should I not worry about the short trips and just go for M3?!

Replies would be appreciated!

I think has your post has strong flavours of commuting and just regular usage then the M3 would be a waste - its a performance car and deserves to be used as the makers intended every now and then.

If you were to take it for a good run every month then it will be fine mechanically but if you are just interested in a daily driver then a 335i would be better suited as its more economical, easier and cheaper to run and the low down fruits of turbocharging make for a flexible engine.

Easy, get an M3 and work out a 30 mile route to work and back taking in some nice roads.

I walk 300m to work and still find myself occasionally taking the car on a 30 mile road trip to travel the 300m to work!

To be honest I don't really understand. You will only EVER do a 10 mile commute weekdays and short local stuff at weekends?? Why even bother with an 'interesting' car at all. I'd buy a very cheap runabout and spend the remaining £s elsewhere in you life.

Whats the problem, My commute into work is about 5 miles each way, But I can still have fun in the M5.. You will probably want to go the scenic route if you get the M3 anyway, Get the M3, Life's too short, You can always make up for it at the weekend anyway, 335i= very nice, M3 = Awesome.

Quite different cars if you ask me.....more than you might imagine. Drive both and you will choose the M3 no contest. If you can find the thread I started I have just asked an owner of both cars for comparison.

The V8 in the M3 will hardly get a chance to get up to normal running temp on a 10 mile run.

It will be warmed up shortly before he turns it off.
And its not like hes only ever gonna do 10 miles each way is it.
OP - you are allowed to drive outside of your normal commute, and you can even drive it on weekends you know.

Your commute and lifestyle is exactly the same as mine. What did I go for in the end?.......an E92 M3.

The best car decision I ever made. If you can justify the cost and don't need the money elsewhere in your life then go for the M3 (I'm assuming you mean an E92 as I cant speak for the E46 M3). They are an insanely fast road car. The V8 is epic.

Those that say the engine won't be up to temp before reaching work must be talking about other cars. My daily commmute is also 10 miles and my engine is upto temp barely a third of the journey in. The rev limiter is temp controlled and keeps the top end reigned in anyway until the engine is warm enough.

Go for the M3.

Sorry but I find it hard to believe that an E92 M3 will be warmed-up fully in three to four miles from a cold start (especially in winter!). Perhaps the lights on the rev counter will have gone out but if they're like the E46 M3 I think they work by reference to water temperature; however, I can't see that the oil will be up to normal operating temperature in such a short mileage. I suppose there will be those that say "so what?" given modern oils but I'm a bit old fashioned and don't believe in giving it the gun until things are properly warmed-through!

I'm referring to the oil temp guage not rev lights or water temp. The oil temp gauge on my car sits between 90-100 degrees when warmed through. It doesn't take long to get there. All it takes is common sense and a little mechanical sympathy to look after your engine.

If it was me with the same choice (it was a while back) then I know I'd suffer from Cayman syndrome. If I got a Porsche Cayman I'd always wished I'd gone for the 911. The same with the 335i. If I got one I'd always wished I'd gone for the M3 instead.

Drive both and see which engine's power delivery suits you best, particularly if your short journeys result in relatively low engine temps. A 335i has done most of its good work below 5500 revs whereas an M3 is just getting into its stride at that point.

My commute is 4 miles and I have an E92 M3, it's fully warmed up according to the rev lights within 2 miles!

Yeah, exactly my point. They must warm up quickly compared to other engines.

I wouldn't let how quickly an engine warms up dictate to me the car I drive. There are plenty of other more important factors to consider beforehand.

If you've always wanted an M3, get an M3. Anything less will be a disappointment.

Had an M3, 996C4S, E46 CSL, a 335, M5, a 135, and now another M3 (E92). It makes me smile considerably more than the *35's. It's a sense of occasion in comparison to any other BMW, bar the CSL, on a par with the M5.

Get it bought.
