Maybe an ae86?
Discussion
As a 19 year old I am some what lost at sea as to what car I'd like to buy. I've been looking since I passed my driving test nearly 2 years ago. I have always been a fan of Japanese performance cars and the prospect of owning a ae86 is tantalizing! I just wanted to know if I was to buy one (at this point I'm still not sure) which year is better in relation to collect ability (I'm aware there was a mk1 and a mk2?) what kind of money a reasonably good one are changing hands these days. Plus importantly where to find one. I've been looking on the internet for a couple of hours and only come across 1! I have looked at other forums and many people choose to import cars from Japan, Is this worth considering? Lastly I'm sure insurance won't be cheap but I'm willing to get it bought and keep it in garage as an investment and wait until I'm of the right age to get it out to where it belongs, on the open road. Any advice would be most welcome.

I too would love an ae86, but for the premium they command, you can get a lot more car for your money. Their inflated prices must have been contributed by the Initial D Anime.
There seems to be a lot of them in Ireland (for some reason?) I think last time I looked you were looking for £4k+ for a decent one. I can name another 5 cars that I'd rather have for the money unfortunately. There must be some specific ae86 forum/s around if you have a google, very niché market for them.

I've... heard they are a lot like a Japanese version of the Capri. Still doesn't stop me wanting one mind. Importing wise, budget a minimum of +40% on top of the FoB price for import taxes and relevant paperwork. Due to their scarcity you could legitimately consider attempting to import one mind, although I can't say I'm aware of the prices out there. You may be surpised mind; an NSX for example costs more in Japan than it does over here.
I'd say more than £4,000. You're looking at closer to £6,000 these days - they've gone up again of late. Ever since that PH article babbling on about how great they were... Hmmmmmmm. I don't think the prices are going anywhere for a while though, at the very least I don't think they're going down, so you'd be depreciation proof at least.
In short you can spend the money a lot more wisely on another car. Drift wise you'd have to consider an S13/4 for that money. Admittedly it wouldn't be as 'pure' an experience mind. Else get a project on the go - find something RWD, NA, and light as a bag of sugar. Then make with the stripping and coilovers.

Gorgeous looking car, but you've gotta be seriously dedicated to pay £6237 for it..I started working for Toyota aged 16 back in 92 and i also fell in love with the AE86 - a yew of years later and nearly 21 i had opportunity to buy a UK model (86 D plte) in a nice champagne colour.
So took it for a spin and yes it was nice but then seller decided to keep - this was before values went silly mad with the drift craze.
Instead i went out and bought a last of line G plate Mk1 AW11 MR2 - for me a nicer car handling wise and never regretted it.
Id advise you to look at MR2's - aw11 - if you cant find a decent value 86

+1 And you have import costs on top of that. You could be looking at the thick end of ten grand before it's on the road. MR-2s are very difficult cars to drift in comparison. Fantastic in different areas mind - I myself have an SW20.
I would consider looking in Ireland, just because in the boom years a lot of nice AE86s went there from Japan, and now the economic situation there is leading to quite a few cars being sold.
There are a couple here for just under £6k

Fairly sure it'll be a lot cheaper to bring a car in from Ireland (EU) than importing from Japan (+ ~35% import taxes, as mentioned).

It seems a shame to turn an AE86 into a drift slag though, given how rare they are. They are plenty of MX5's and still a few Silvias that could be drifted around if that is your bag. The MR2 is not about drifting, in the same was as a Ferrari 355 is not about drifting, being mid-engined. It's a fantastic car though.MR-2s are very difficult cars to drift in comparison. OP, I suspect the advice you will get here will be largely the same as you got in the GG thread. It's a cult car now so you are going to pay a lot of cash for it and without a NCB behind you I think you'll struggle to get insurance at a reasonable price. To get hold of a decent AE86 from Japan and insure it could be knocking on well over £12,000. Plus, if you buy an import you'll probably find it even harder to get insurance despite the fact it could be considered a parallel import if Toyota ever sold the AE86 on UK soil (I believe they did in NI, leading to it's legendary status there).
I love the AE86, but there's no way I'd spend the thick end of £10k+ on one.

I appreciate where you're coming from. Maybe this an aspiration that is better left for another couple of years and then take the plunge once I've got more experience and money behind me? Anyway thanks for the info guys. Hope to one day join your ranks as an owner of some serious Japanese metal. I absolutely love these cars,I love some 80s cars, especially the quattro,I have been lucky enough to work on an ae86 as my friend owns one, will be an amazing car when its done,1.6 supercharged engine, also he's put a turbo on it and devoloped an anti-lag system for it also, can't wait till its done not long now then can ride shot gun for a drive

Just to note, last year I imported an MR2 Mk1 Supercharger ( a cousin of the AE86) from Eire.
The import itself is not difficult at all. It cost me £55 to register the car, the MOT and then the cost of plates (ignoring the travel costs). That is all. I checked with VOSA and they were very helpful. My car had just got the NCT, the Eire equivalent of the MOT so I assumed an MOT pass was a given, I was very very wrong. It basically had no floor so I personally do not have any faith in the NCT but it could have just been a bad experience.
As for Insurance, there are specialists out there who can handle the import issue (my car was never originally sold in the UK it was Japan and USA only) but you need to speak to an expert.
I used Sky Insurance who were not the absolute cheapest but still reasonable and I had confidence I was fully covered in Eire and the UK and during the Registration process as they listened to me. I won't compare my premium as I am (significantly) older than you with lots of no claims and it my second car.
Check out the AE86 owners club who I understand are very helpful but do not worry about importing from Eire, it is just a paperwork pain.
