Crisps (rubbish portions and general wittering)

I'm generally a fan of Seabrook "Sea Salted" but now and again Mrs Tapeworm buys a multipack of something exotic, today is "Walkers Baked Stars".

I've just opened a bag to be greeted by 7 crisps, 7 whole crisps in a 23g bag. They are constructed using "potato flakes", this seems wrong.

Given this seems to be the norm with a lot of crisps these days why don't they make the bags half the size? Is it a customer perception thing or do they need all that extra air to stay at their best? Is it padding?

Am I just harking back to better times but didn't bags of crisps used to be filled to the top?

Anyway I'm keen to expand my horizons, I like Kettle Chips and anything else more natural that looks like it came from a potato, ideally ready salted and quite thick-cut. What can you recommend (other than no crisps because I'm on a diet).

I was considering making some myself in the oven at some point but it seems like a lot of faff for little gain when the pros can do it so well.

i buy large (150g) bags of red sky crisps for 59p. the sea salted are delicious but my favs are the cheese and bacon.

I'm guessing you only get 7 crisps in the bag because the manufacturer wants to proclaim "Look! Less than 100 calories per bag!"

Yep, the regular Walkers stuff is crap, barely a mouthful in a bag. If I'm going out of my way to eat chips, it's a big bag of Kettle Chips, Red Sky or Tyrells for me. The Red Sky West country bacon and cream cheese flavour is my favourite at the moment.

That's rather rude of them, especially when it's with the Revels of the crisp world - I can't remember which one it is now but one type of those veg crisps is grim while the others are much more acceptable.

Not in mainstream, but have you tried Salty Dog?- the Salt and Vinegar are the potato equivilent of crack.

Amazingly addictive and so much better than Kettle Chips.

Rather apt thread. I've spent the day looking round the seabrooks production line, and the tech they use is amazing. Very reminiscent of wonk as factory.

All the bags were coming out within .15g of each other. Tweet or email them, they are generally very customer orientated, I'd be surprised if they didn't make it up to you.

Also experienced fresh seabrooks still hot on the conveyor belt today. Indescribably good.

I love Seabrooks Hot & Spicy: 2 Chilli crisps. Really over the top flavour (not that spicy). Can't find them around my way any more, though.

Wait... I have just noticed they sell boxes of them through amazon!

The Thai sweet chilli ones are the best, but you can't get them anywhere anymore (so I've just bought a corner shop size box of them online )

They sell on their website too. I won a couple of boxes s while ago and finally became popular at work. Nice to try all the flavours but I still go back to good old salted.

"real hand cooked" Jalepeno pepper crisps are without doubt the finest crisps ever made. Proper hot, none of the poofy sweet chilli rubbish!

I find them a bit too salty.
Granted - you get plenty of bang for your buck, but I can't help thinking that it's not really a quality product.
I'd go with Kettle Chips, Walker's Sensations (Thai chilli or roasted chicken & thyme) or the Marks & Spencer range.
