well about 2 months ago i sold my vx220 because i simply wasnt using it enough to justify its upkeep, Since then I have taken delivery of the evoque I had on order for ages and the mrs has also got a new car.
Before i got the vx220 i owned a mk1 mx5 50/50 with my dad and although i didnt use it that much i used it more than the vx220 as I wasnt bothered about using it in bad weather or where i parked it etc etc.
Now for the last couple of days i have had the urge to get another mx5 even though i know i again probably wouldnt use it that much. I would only be looking for a 2k car max and could maybe persuade my dad to share the costs/use again (the last one cost a pittance to run).
Why do i yearn for a 15 year old impractical sports car?

Cars aren't rational.I've owned literally hundreds, I rarely keep a car over 3 months - I've owned a supercharged MX5 for over 13 years and have no intention of ever selling it.
My RX7 is much faster, my T4 far more practical, my Chimaera has far more presence but I love my MX5 - I'd sell all of them before it.
I bought a MK1 auto (cripple) due to all the good words spoken on here. Loved it with a passion. Finally sold it due to two bigish dogs a wife and it not all fitting together properly and regretted it ever since.
I know it wasn't practical and my (24 year old) son took the wee-wee out of my "Girly" car but I really miss it. If I could work out a way of fitting the two dogs in it safely (they sit happily in the back of the Merc convertable) then I'd get another and flog the SL.
So in short: do it!

If you're looking for someone to dissuade you from buying an MX5, you're on the wrong site. I've had my MX-5 from new since 2001. In that time it's seen an MX-3 and RX-8 come and go, we bought it back from the insurers as a write off last year after an accident, I'm sure it'll outlast the XKR too. We will never, ever sell it, any more than we'd sell our own child.
They are great. We sold ours recently, but TBH I'd think long and hard about another one.
No matter how you keep it, it's like Russian Roulette with rust rather than bullets, and a proper fix isn't cheap if/when the worm comes a calling.
Shame really, as the car's so very very good in every other respect.

And it's irrational to smoke, drink, eat unhealthy food and do dangerous sports. But people do it because they enjoy it. And why work and earn money if you can't do things you enjoy with it?Don't justify the thing - just buy it
