Is it a mk4/mk5 Fiesta by chance? My wife's '97 Fiesta has the same problem. It's caused by the driver's side lock barrel wearing out. They're designed so that any Ford key will lock them but only the right key will unlock them, so when they wear out, they will only lock.
We've just got used to going round the passenger side to unlock the car. There was a guy on ebay who would supply a pair of new lock barrels marched to your current key. You either read the key number yourself (possibly tricky to do) from the key or sent the spare key off to him to match to the locks. All in all about £35 iirc.
