This is not as straight forward as the title suggests - and I didn't want to crash the 'itchy dog' thread.

For four years now our English Setter has had various sores on his legs caused by licking. It seemed to start when a younger pup came along and was licking him - and he realised that the 'happy hormones' are a nice thing. So he took over and obsessed woth the licking to the point where all four legs were bandaged. He also seems to have developed hay fever - for which he is getting the piriton.

It got to a point where the wounds were creaping into the crack on his rear elbows - for the last six weeks he has had on a victorian collar (which we have used in the past). This time the vet has given some special tablets referred to him by a dog dermatologist. And the legs are looking really good, if a little hairless.

The question is, we want to stop using the victorian collar as soon as possible - its the biggest available due to the length of his legs. We are just worried that when he is left while we are at work we will come back to find new nasty open wounds. And we don't want the dog wearing the collar for the rest of his life.

He did stop obsessing on his front legs - so may stop on the back as well. But does anyone have any ideas to safeguard new sores being created ?

I've been looking after a staffy with what sounds like the same problem and to an originally similar extent for six months now. As an experiment I tried a new product called Anti Lick Strip by Nutured Pets which you wrap on the leg a bit like a bandage. It has healing properties and tastes awful so they don't touch it.

I was sceptical but it worked superbly. They healed once so I stopped using it but because he was bored in kennels he opened them up again. I used the product again with repeated success then found him a companion dog to alleviate boredom and allocated him a dedicated dog walker and he's been perfect since. Now we just need to find him a home!
