...for a 8 week Beagle pup. Any recommendations?

I understand the need for it to be just the right size so the dog can sit up and turn around etc, and also not to be tooooooo big that it can comfortably mess in one corner, and then go lay in the other corner, comfortably. Google doesn't really throw much up re size, ie 30inch etc. We have a Pets at Home nearby - are these a decent quality?

Thanks

Pets at Home will be decent quality but inordinately expensive.

Try The Range, if there's one near you. We got our big crate from there, a year ago, and it's still in daily use now. Much cheaper than PaH. Or look online/ebay, for cheaper ones, although quality might not be as easy to spot.

Can't remember sizes (sorry, so not much help there!), but both PaH and The Range usually have one of each size assembled on show, so should be fairly easy to judge sizes. Good thing about the smaller ones (suitable for a pup) is that they're usually under £25, so no problems on cost, and you can just buy a bigger one when you need it, and stow the smaller one somewhere for your next pup. wink

Thanks again Karyn. That's what i was thinking - buy a smaller (suitable) one now, and then another later...

We have a Range store within 7or8 miles smile

We got our crates for our dogs online. We got Savic crates from canine concepts. The cage for our sprimger was simple as we got her at 6 months so she didn't have much more growing to do. We've had our collie from a pup and for him we got a crate that would fit him when he was fully grown. We also got a divider to make the crate smaller and stored stuff we didn't need for a while in that space. We are still using the same crate. We went for the XL size for our Collie's crate, which it turns out is bigger than was needed, although he may not have been able to stand up fully in a smaller crate. Our Collie is quite big for a collie, but i think we overestimated how big he was going to be. The large crate is useful as we can fit both dogs in comfortably if we want to. Our Collie loves his crate and always goes inside if he gets scared i.e. thinks he is going to have to go into the bath, as we never touch him when he is in there as it's his safe place and he knows it.

We got a lab crate for our beagle, from some place online. Sorry cannot remember the name of them. It has a divider to make it smaller for when he was a pup. Too large a space and they can feel intimidated, so we opened it up gradually as he grew.

Cheers for replies. A friend has kindly loaned me one. It is 30inch x 20 x 24. I'm thinking it might be tooooo big for a pup. Going to try it anyhow, and if too big, will buy a smaller one smile

You don't want it to be too small - it should feel like a 'den' to the dog rather than a confined cage. My pup has always gone in the crate and loves it, one thing I always did was feed her in the crate (with the door open) from day 1, being a lab she is very food orientated (Beagles tend to be too IME) so it creates positive associations with the crate.

Lots of talk of cheap crates. Do be careful, as cheap often equals crap quality with bare wire ends and very rough corners...not good for a dog of any age.

Bare in mind that a decent crate could be used for the life of the dog with occasions like holiday cottages and so on...just a thought smile

I have seen first hand crates from The Range break away on the bars due to poor workmanship and low quality materials.

I have two, a savic which is zinc coated and feels very well made and can't be rattled open and one from pets at home which is powder coated and my older GSP has broken out of this a couple of times and even snaped some of the bars with her paws, she's strong as an ox.

I have seen a few crates that have been broken out of. Dog usually pulls the short end into itself and the crate space. Not good.

IMO a dog should not be crated if it is stressed inside. Bloody teeth and claws can result.

Otherwise I am in fact a fan of dog crates when used sensibly and with a dog that is relaxed about be in it smile

Hey nick,

Agree with you 100% it happened when she was when she was learning the ropes and at 6 years old having never been crated I think it was a bit of a shock. Fine with it now and in fact she knocks me over to get to the crate at bed time.
