Sorry. LSI is a PH'er who might have a lot to say about that particular engine. He had a lot of issues with his Mazda 6 last year. I've 'pointed' him at this thread.

That's a bit pricey given the mileage IMO.

But the 6 itself is a pretty good car. We bought a petrol 2l estate (53 plate 80k miles) and I'm very impressed with it.

The simple answer is do not, under any circumstances, buy a diesel Mazda 6.

A petrol one should be fine though, in fact a petrol one would be a lovely car. The Mazda 6's problems are firmly placed with the diesel engine.

I'm glad that I avoided the diesels when I looked for a 3 then. Do you know if the 3 diesel has similar issues?

I currently own a 2 litre petrol Sport.

I wouldn't touch a mk1 diesel. Injectors, flywheel, clutch, various issues.

I just sold my 2.0 petrol and it was an excellent car, surprisingly frugal for what is it.

Things to look out for are :
- clunking rear suspension
- rust on arches and sills
- boot water ingestion
- any engine rattles

Other than that, a good one will last well, they are very comfortable inside and good to drive. The 2.0 petrol makes quite a good noise when you plant the foot in 2nd or 3rd !

This. Unless you like constant trips to the dealer/mechanic to get the diesel drained out of the sump, the DPF regen'ed, and injectors done.

The petrol ones are good, though. Even the 1.8 goes well enough (same engine as the 1.8 Mondeo), 125hp conservative, 35mpg, and totally and utterly unburstable.
