. . . if they provoke a "full system reset" every time I eat one? I had half a leek and a carrot yesterday, and have evacuated about a third of my body weight today as they raced through my system in a desperate bid for freedom. I'm trying to eat more healthily now my exams/revision have finished, but I'm not convinced it's doing me any good! Should I persevere with consuming less sugary rubbish and extra fruit and veg, or has my body evolved to thrive on a diet of black coffee, jaffa cakes and bacon?

You might want to see a doctor, eating vegetables shouldn't do that to you...

Sounds as though you have IBS symptoms. Try avoiding high fibre veg such as leeks and sticking to low fibre veg. suc has spinach, squash, swede, tomatoes (without skin and pips), turnip, watercress, peppers, pumpkin, radishes, courgettes, celery, cauliflower (florets, not stem), broccoli (florets, not stems), beetroot, bean sprouts.

Onion and garlic are to be avoided, as are cabbage, beans (baked, broad, runner, green etc.), mushrooms, parsnips.

Do you eat fruit? Fruit also falls into high (to be avoided) and low fibre categories. Low fibre fruits are apples, apricots, RIPE banana, cherries, fruit cocktail, grapes, lychees, nectarines, peaches, plums, melon. Avoid skin and pips though and eat them fresh, tinned or stewed, not dried.
Also, contrary to current healthy eating advice, you should avoid wholemeal and wholegrain breads, cereals and pasta and have the white stuff instead.

IBS symptoms can be aggravated by stress so you might find symptoms become milder or even resolve altogether once your exams are over. Good luck with them!

All the above regardless, you should go to your GP so that he/she can refer you for tests to eliminate other possible causes.
