Off to the Porche museum in two weeks or so
Discussion
We are there next Wednesday, museum and factory tour.
We are taking the overnight ferry to Rotterdam and then the Ring and Hockenheim enroute....
This is our route, you could pick it up on the way from France.

I used to do this run quite often, and mostly took the above mentioned route through Belgium. My thinking was always to get onto the German tarmac in order to avoid speed limits. However, driving through Belgium is no fun whatsoever , and once in Germany, the unrestricted passages on the A61 were few and far between. Dropping in at the Ring (check for opening times beforehand) was always a very valid argument to go this way, anyway!
However, promted by your thread, I have just discovered a map of the Autobahn sp**d restrictions covering the whole of Germany -

Unfortunately it has not been updated since 2009 (for reasons I cannot possibly imagine) but will still give you a general feel for where the fixed limits are. The ones on the A61 appear to be pretty much correct, and as you can see there are other excellent alternatives.
Since about two years, the r*d*r cameras have stopped looking like left over surveilance equipment from the w*r, and have taken the form of silver 3m tall cylinders with red plexiglass bands around them. Just keep to within 10 km/h of the limits and you will be ok. The amount of traffic surveilance in Germany is, in comparison to the UK, minimal. Drive responsibly and enjoy.
I cannot vouch for the presence of road works and rush hour traffic. Choose your jouney time well.
You will really enjoy the Museum. If you have time (4 hours) after visiting Porsche, drive 25 Km south down to Böblingen (just across the way from the Mercedes factory) and visit the Meilenwerk. There are a couple of cafes and restaurants there, and plenty of car culture to enjoy.
Wolfgang-Brumme-Allee 55, 71034 Böblingen is the address.

......and if you still have a day to kill, drive straight on south on the A81 from here to Lake Constance (about 160 Km). The autobahn run down to the lake is one of the best in the country, and the lake itself is stunning. Shortly before the lake, at Hegau, take the the sweeper towards Stockach and then get off the A98 and go down to the "old" B31 lakeside road south until Meersburg. Cross the lake on the Ferry to Constance and then drive north back to Stuttgart. Meersburg and Constance are both worth a stop, too.
If you are still ahead of time (fast car, good roads) make a stop in at Autosalon Singen, and the Porsche dealership in Hegau.

Hi - just to say wife and I are headed across to Stuttgart, down into Austria and across Stelvio to Como at the end of August. Haven't really started planning yet but will be back on here looking for tips. Great info so far.
Stay away from the Ring for the next few days http://www.rock-am-ring.com/ Full of kids and tents, rubbish all over the place and a bit of a Police presence.
