New owner and unfamiliar with Porsche engines - Can anyone identify from attached photos what is red fluid leaking from 'drain'(?) plug?

Will help to engender degree of panic!

regards

Or power steering hydraulic fluid, or the red dye used to identify aircon leaks??

I had a similar problem back in Feb 2101

http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...

the car was fixed under warranty but I think it was a seal leaking on the front transmission in my case. Other feedback was it may be the power steering.

Yeah but not behind a plug of this type, and on a larger casing (gearbox or engine), as per picture????????

A wider picture would help identify what this drain plug is actually for.

Is it a tip? Automatic Transmission Fluid? It's not from the power steering, pic not right and the PAS fluid is Pentosin in Porsches which is green.

That might be coolant?? Looking at the picture, there's a coolant pipe just to the left of the plug, and I'm sure the water pump is up above that plug. It may be a drain plug for draining the coolant from the block?????

Is the coolant in the expansion bottle red/pink?? And is the fluid that's leaking runny or thick??

If it's runny I would say coolant.

This thread is on a 996, I know, but would suggest that it's the same layout as a 997??

It looks like it's a coolant drain plug. Easy fix i would imagine. Just a copper or aluminium washer required and some coolant.

thread from rash-decision i.e. http://sharkwerks.com/porsche/technical-articles/1... looks promising.

However, level in coolant tank hasn't dropped and stain on driveway is more than I would have expected from a water based fluid but...

Given concensus is coolant (which one can keep an eye on - car can be driven to vendor (as recently bought) for a fix.

will revert with ultimate result

again - super service form you guys
