I have a lovely black 997 with turbo wheels, in chrome and dark grey. The lacquer has been damaged by the salt, and all wheels need refurbishment. I have the change to paint them matt black or gloss, or keep them the same, albeit the extra cost.

I'd like to hear your views, not abuse, at the thought of keeping the shiny chrome, or going black.

I am undecided, even after looking at loads of images on google.
Thanks Porsche fans

Have they gone like this ? I am considering having mine done. The Gen one Turbo gets stick about these wheels stating too bling, personally I think they suit the car making me reluctant to stray from the original .

It will cost you more to go for black, as there'll be the extra cost to change them back to silver once this fashion 'fad' for black wheels passes shortly...

By Christ, that's terrible.

I'd be ashamed to drive a car with the badge not pointing to the valve.

That is bad , mine have done 47 K and are no where near as pitted as that .

That looks like a replica wheel - due to the lack of numbers by the valve but also because they rarely corrode that badly all over. Also, the finish is not chrome, it's what's often referred to as "diamond cut", which is a way of polishing the bare metal, after which it is lacquered. Same for original and replicas.

It looks like these could either be a poorer quality alloy, or poorer quality lacquer, or both. If you go for the original finish, make sure they re-lacquer the whole wheel very thoroughly to try to prevent the same thing happening again (the milkiness you have is caused by moisture getting under the lacquer).

Someone on here had their 997 Turbo wheels re-done with the standard polished finish on the spokes but had the rest done in a gloss black (as opposed to the standard grey) and it looked pretty good to me (on a black car).

Thegoose you are correct, they are replica. When new and until only last month they really looked like a top wheel. I therefore hope from what you say, that its the lacquer that is poor not the alloy. In fact the rear wheels are almost perfect, so I hope that the fronts just weren't lacquered as well.
I will stick to the diamond cut I think, have them carefully lacquered again and rinse after salty winter driving too.
Cheers for the comments
