No you dont. The manual gearbox does not suit the car at all, and frankly it is a poor gearbox.I would love an M5 but got no chance i couldnt afford the fuel on a 4.8 x5, i wouldnt stand a chance on a 5 litre V10!!

I ran a manual e60 m5 for two weeks when in the US, so speak from experience of driving both.
The SMG isnt as bad as it is reported, in town it can be jerky but you can drive around it with practice. When pressing on the SMG is excellent and really suits the high revs and banging up and down as fast as you can push the paddles really is something.

I've driven a manual M6 and thought the box really suited the car.The SMG isnt as bad as it is reported, in town it can be jerky but you can drive around it with practice. Comments about the gearbox relate to the E60 M5 V10, not the E39.
Issues;
- Very baulkey between 1st and 2nd, if you have driven the Z4M Coupe, like that but much worse
- The ratios between the gears was just crazy, making rapid progress was really poor beacuse of this
- Overall quality of the changes with the gearbox was poor which means you cant change down quickly/smoothly enough
